Many people theorized that the SO6P will eventually return somehow in Naruto but this is the way I foresee the unfolding of events. Bear with me.
The Great Sage Toad predicted that Jiraiya will be the master of the one who will save or destroy the entire world. Nagato nor Minato did not destroy nor save the world, thus the last obvious choice is Naruto.
The SO6P is always mentioned as a benevolent individual, much like Naruto.
There have been many hints already that Naruto is the reincarnation of the sage, from his cloak to his hair, etc.
It is also an interesting fact to note that the Sage defeated the juubi and liberated the world.....now Naruto is facing the juubi as well(and will no doubt defeat it).....what a coincidence!
Here's the big one. Kurama mentioned Naruto being the "Old Man's" blank(reincarnation)
Now onto my theory. Naruto is the reincarnation of the sage, which means that the Sage will not make a true appearance, but like all reincarnations they do not have their original memory.
Considering that Naruto was slowly gaining the Sage's appearance, he will also eventually regain the Rikudou's memory through some ordeal, perhaps through defeating the juubi, and be truly reborn as the sage.
