Quick Intro. Brand New. I overthink things, but not well enough to be game theory. And I have been thinking about naruto a lot. So here I am to bounce some of my more interesting theories off of you guys.
SPOILER ALERT
My theory is that the 8 Gates is a stand alone entirely unique technique that has NOTHING TO DO WITH CHAKRA OR JUTSUS WHATSOEVER and is a Chi based technique. So. Before I go any further I want to make it known that I already know there are words spoken by characters that contradict this, but frankly, I assume these characters wouldn't know this either. And to understand what it is, we have to go back to the beginning of recorded history in Naruto.
For those of you who know the story of the manga, how Kaguya ate the fruit and gained the power of chakra, which is passed through her children creating the great lineages of ninjas. The thing is, to gain the power of chakra you either ate the fruit which only one person ever did, or what was infinitely more common was it is similar to a dominant genetic trait and you were the child of a carrier of the "chakra gene".
So, I think it's safe to assume that after the first few generations, some became rather privileged with their power, and either over time, oppressed the people lacking chakra out of existence, or exterminated them, hence the ancient issues with weaponizing chakra.
Now. I am going to err on the side of saying Gai CAN use Chakra, and form hand signs, but simply chooses not to, unlike Rock Lee. I think Rock Lee is an atavism, had 2 parents who had recessive no chakra genes.
Think about this. With Chakra and Hand signs, people can form water, wood, mud, etc. These are physical things that make real impacts on the world. But with the Rinnegan these things can be absorbed, but not the natural equivalent of them. Nor can people. Everything COULD have simply been made of chakra since it runs naturally throughout the world, but there are clearly things that can't be done that imply it isn't that way. (I steal most of this stuff from NF)
Additionally, Kakashi cannot COPY the 8 Gates, he finally unlocks 1 gate after climbing a mountain 1 handed with sharingan activated and a rock tied to his waist (if I remember all this correctly). The 8 gates can only be unlocked through complete mastery of one's own body. No amount of Chakra, Hand Signs, or mastery of Jutsus helps at all.
I believe all this adds up to the idea that the 8 Gates is a natural human ability, entirely separate from the Chakra and Jutsu world Kaguya brought.
Honestly, it would make sense if his metabolic rate was simply going insane. The green mist is kind of harder to explain, small amounts of body moisture capturing light around him
The Blue mist is when his metabolic rate is so high his body is burning off water at a crazy rate creating a blue vapor mist around him.
The Red Mist is when blood starts boiling right through skin, this is a run away effect, you have now pushed the body too far, and it starts to break down. As the overheating goes supercritical veins can be seen glowing across the surface off the skin as the pump something close to magmatic blood.
Anyway this is just my thought. I think it would be a cool side piece of lore. And also explain why it's super effective against Madara when nothing else is.
Also, I know that supposedly people can see his "chakra points" opening and whatnot. But the thing is why couldn't it be chi that he is seeing and simply not know it. An internal force to chakra's external force.
