Sometimes Oda reimplements many of real world events, people, and places to One Piece. In his hands, One Piece has became an amazing collaboration of Oda’s imagination and real world inspirations.
I found something interesting about importance of tree elements in One Piece Universe. What I meant is not the ordinary trees, but the huge, great trees. Until now, there are 3 great trees in One Piece: The Tree of Knowledge, The Treasure Tree of Adam and The Sunlight Tree of Eve.
From what I see, Oda tries to use elements of the story of creation in book of genesis from the holy bible, where it took place in the Garden of Eden. Beside The Holy Creator/God, there were Adam, Eve, the Serpent, Tree of Knowledge and Tree of Life.
The First Tree:*The Tree of Knowldege
The fruit from the tree of knowledge, according to the bible, gives the eater knowledge about good and evil. In One Piece,*The Tree of Knowledge or The Tree of Omniscence was a 5,000 year old gigantic library tree on Ohara Island. Archaeologists of Ohara studied and did some research about the Void Century in the Tree of Knowledge. By studying the poneglyphs, they were able to learn about the true history, about the good and evil of the World Government who prevented them from studying about the void century.
The Second Tree:*The Treasure Tree of Adam & The Third Tree: The Sunlight Tree of Eve
The Treasure Tree of Adam and The Sunlight Tree of Eve were, of course, resembling Adam and Eve, the first humans according to the bible.
In my interpretation, Adam’s image resembles “strength”, which makes them more powerful and dominant. Oda uses it as reference of the second great tree, The Tree of Adam, which has the most powerful wood in One Piece.
On the other side, Eve’s image resembles “motherliness” and “life”, which is more gentle than Adam, or men in common. Oda uses it as reference of the third tree, The Sunlight Tree of Eve. It is through this tree’s roots that Fishman Island is able to have light 10,000 meters below the surface of the ocean.
The Fourth Tree
After Adam, Eve and The Knowledge Tree, there is*the Serpent. The Serpent resembled the satan, in other word, the devil. Adam and Eve are the inspiration of The Treasure Tree of Adam and The Sunlight Tree of Eve, then there would be a high possibility the existence of The Tree of the Devil.
Why should it exist? Because there are devil fruits. The devil tree is a tree where devil fruits are produced. By having such a great tree, people who living around them must have been able to get used to devil fruit powers and even using them for daily life. With that powers, they were a step further from people around the world. The power allowed them to develop, civilize, and even create strong weapons against their enemy. Yes, I think the people living around/with it were the Great Kingdom which was destroyed in the void century.
By using devil fruit powers for decades, it is also possible that they were able to list all name of the devil fruit and its power in a book. This book is the reason why Blackbeard had already known about the power of Yami Yami no Mi before finding the fruit, and Sanji had known about Absalom’s devil fruit power before meeting him.
After knowing their weakness, the 20 kingdom started making weapons with sea stones/kairoseki to hunt and annihilate them. Before the war, people of the kingdom had already known about the annihilation plan and sent some of their people as “the messengers” to travel around the world for two reasons. To bring poneglyphs as message to the future generations, and of course to maintain their bloodline.
Some of them chose to stay in the kingdom to protect the tree and finally died in the war, protecting their land and the great tree (like the scholars in Ohara), while “the messengers” keep on living in shadow as the “D“escendants.
This is also where “the messengers” dropped a poneglyph in Fishman Island, which was an apologize message from Joy Boy from the Great Kingdom. If the Theory of Inherited Will is correct, then I assume Joy Boy couldn’t finish his mission with Fishman Island because he had to stay and protect his kingdom.
In the void century, 20 kingdoms, united as World Government, started to hunt the “D“escendants with all might. Believing some of them still remains, they started the doctrine about them, the ‘first devil fruit users’ are actually the devil, the enemy of god.
Also after the war, they acquired the Tree of the Devil but somehow it stopped producing fruit. Believing there was someway to “resurrect” the tree, they kept it as secret and as World Government’s national treasure. Doflamingo knows about this and of course Celestial Dragons are afraid if this info would be spread all over the world.
