Okay, so I think the edo tensei works like this.
Edo tensei has everything to with what time (Kabuto/Orochimaru) got the users blood.
Here are some examples to show you what I mean by my theory.
1.)--Torune. Torune was meerely a demonstration to show Tobito how to use and how to stop the Edo. Torune was summoned with the blood Kabuto took from him right then once Tobito killed him, and summoned him back to how he was just before he died. If Kabuto somehow got Torunes blood at an earlier time, then if he summoned him, Torune would be summoned with the abilities he had at that time Kabuto got his blood.
2.)--Nagato. Nagato was summoned in his very weak state. This doesn't make sense because it should bring him back to his prime. Well, If Kabuto or Orochimaru had gotten his blood after his fight with Naruto, then the edo tensei would bring him back to life from that certain time they got his blood. (His weak form), Not his prime.
3.)--Granny Chiyo. Granny Chiyo was summoned as her old self. Maybe she was at her prime when she was this old but, my theory being, if Kabuto or Orochimaru got her blood from her during Sasori's fight, then Kabuto would summon her from when he got her blood(when she was old).
4.)-- Madara. This one stumps me. As we all know, Madara was summoned during his prime/enhanced.
My theory wouldn't make sence because
a.) Madara was at his prime way before Orochimaru and Kabuto were born to even try to get his DNA
b.) We just found out Madara was still alive but in a different..dimension, so Kabuto or Orochimaru wouldn't be able to get to him to get a sample of his DNA. Even if they did get Old Madara's DNA, my theory would make Madara be summoned as his old self and not his prime.
But, here's what I think. The 2nd Hokage was the man who founded the Edo Tensei. Sometime back when Hashirama and Tobirama fought Madara(back when Madara was in his prime), Tobirama had gotten some blood and stored it or "saved it" somewhere safe where he thought no one would get it for future useage. Well, i'm not putting it past Orochimaru to somehow get knowledge of it and get it without being traced.
So if this occured, Kabuto could summon the Madara from back then using the blood the 1st and 2nd had gotten.
