I often see people in the library failing to understand the logic behind Kage Bunshin and the fact that this move effectively halves the user’s current chakra.
Kage Bunshin is Naruto’s signature move; he uses it in each of his fights, sometimes extravagantly by creating thousands of clones.
Naruto is known to have ridiculously large chakra reserves but even him must have his limits; no matter how large his reserves they can’t be hundred of times greater than those of Kakashi, Sasuke or even Sakura.
This is obviously a plot hole unless there is something more to the term “chakra reserve”; if we consider that the chakra system of each character is composed of two parts then everything starts to make sense again.
First part: the chakra coils.
It’s the chakra circulating system; the chakra is constantly circulating through the body via the tenketsus and is usable at a moment's notice; it’s the chakra used to perform jutsus and reinforce one’s body. By training, these coils can grow stronger and larger, allowing the user to have more chakra at hand in order to use stronger jutsus and in greater quantity.
Second part: the chakra reserves.
It’s the chakra stocked inside the cells; the cells are constantly producing chakra in order to aliment the coils. By training these reserves can grow stronger and larger, the cells stocking and producing more chakra.
Concrete exemple:
In Naruto's case the Kyuubi constitutes another reserve.
Naruto’s status as a jinchuuriki almost certainly allows him to replenish his reserves many times faster than for a normal human; it’s the addition of all those factors that allows Naruto to spam thousands of clones and other very chakra expensive techniques without dying of chakra exhaustion.
In short:
Naruto’s coils are larger and more developed.
Naruto’s reserves are larger and more developed.
Naruto’s chakra can replenish itself very rapidly.
Naruto has the Kyuubi’s chakra to fall back on.
