Hey,

I'm here to explain why Indra, the king of Gods is a villain, and Ashura, the demon is a hero, in the Naruto manga. Before I explain you that, you need to know a little about Indian mythology.

There are a lot of Gods, according to Indian mythology. But if we go deep into the history, we can find out a few points.

We'll do some comparisons here..

The main Gods, who created the very world that we are living in, are 3 Gods,

- Brahma

- Vishnu

- Shiva

, the creator of all things. (You can click the name, for more info)
, the god of illusion.
, he is more or less looks like a demon. Is very angry. He is very powerful and is capable of defeating both Brahma and Vishnu(This is not really known. But he can completely destroy everything when he opens his 3rd eye.)

Lets say, they are equal to Hogorama/Sage of six paths.

These Gods treated everyone equally. Including the demons, and normal Gods.

Say, Gods are the Uchiha

Now, Imma compare the events that took place in the manga to Indian mythology.

  • Each God was gifted with an unique power, the Uchiha too would gain an unique power when they awaken their Mangekyou.
  • Tobirama assigned the Uchiha to guard the people in the village. We all know that Gods are supposed to protect people.
  • Susanoo's origin: When God's are angry, their size will be increased, like about 200x or more than that and they also has about 4-10 hands, yielding a weapon in each hand.
  • Here's some images

  • Ameterasu: Agni, the God of Fire, flames, blazes is capable of controlling flames at his will. The Uchiha does it with their eyes.
  • Genjutsu: Well, lord Vishnu, his speciality is that, he sets people into illusions, he's other name is Maya, which means illusion.

Now, Ashuras are Senju

Lets continue comparing, shan't we?

The ashuras didn't had any unique ability. They were always in groups. However, some demons trained hard/born gifted (or, when they rigorously worship one of the Gods, they will be granted some wishes.)- Hashirama, Tobirama.

They(Ashuras) were well known for their strength and their endurance. Senjus possess the same talent.

Now, the transmigration and the juubi's origin

Juubi's origin: There was a huge war between Gods and Ashuras because they both wanted the sacred water (Amrutham)which would make them immortal. Just like the juubi fruit. Ashuras and Gods got into an agreement which was broken by the Gods, and the Gods drank the sacred water. They were cheated by one of the 3 main Gods, that is Vishnu - (Maya).

Transmigration

- So, whenever a demon takes its origin, a God will also be born. For instance, in order to kill Kamsa(Ashura's transmigrant), Krishna(Vishnu's transmigrant) was born. This cycle continues, and keeps continuing..

Most of the naruto manga, more or less is related to Indian mythology.

And finally, the moon-eye plan(Infinite Tsukoyami)
Lord Shiva has a third eye, which is very very very powerful. He opens it when he is very angry. Whenever he opens that eye, everything(the universe)will be destroyed. So, yeah this is related to the moon eye plan.
When the infinite tsukoyami is casted, there will be nothing left, people would continue dreaming.

No religious feelings intended in this post.
Also, this is only a theory, which would mean that these are not 100% true. Its true that the Manga is derived from Shintoism and Buddhism. It also would mean that, the manga could also be derived from Hinduism =D
My English is not that good, hope I made this post as understandable as possible.

As an Indian, well the references are quite correct except a few corrections-

1. Asuras were always known for greater than normal endurance and physical strength. That is another similar trait with senju.
2. The fight between Senju and Uchiha clans was not based on the fruit. It was based on their ideology of how world peace should be attained and the fact that Indra was butthurt. That is a wrong connection.

And these traits are pretty much common with most religions/mythologies. Look at greek, for example. And the main influence has been Buddhism and Shintoism.
