I'm sure you guys are wondering what the HELL I'm talking about, but bear with me here.

The idea is, Minato Namikaze draws heavily on the mythology surrounding Hanuman, who inspired Sun Wukong (in China), or Son Goku (Japan).

Yes, the Goku that inspired THE Goku.

Hanuman was a once monkey with the favour of Vayu, the deva (a godlike being) of air. Hanuman thought the sun was a fruit and decided to eat it. On his quest to consume the sun, he beat up a being responsible for eclipses, and was thereafter struck down by a lightning-bolt tossed by the Indra, king of the deva. Vayu thereafter removed all air from the mortal plane, causing Indra and the rest of the deva to revive Hanuman and give him many blessings, to appease the angry wind god.

So yeah, this doesn't sound much like Minato.

But what became of the monkey AFTER the blessings kinda does.

Hanuman was removed from the touch of death, untouchable by weapons in battle, faster than the deva of air himself. The monkey became a famed warlord and scholar, vanquishing men and demons alike.

And if that wasn't enough, the list of epiphets given to him sound suspiciously similar to Minato's abilities, character, and even appearance, to some degree. Copied directly from Wikipedia:

  • Manojavam, the one who is swift as mind. (Pretty much LITERALLY accurate in Minato's case.)
  • Maarutatulyavegam, the one who has a speed equal to the wind God. (Flyng Thunder GOD, anyone?)
  • Buddhimataamvarishtham, the one who is most senior among intellectuals. (Minato is second to none in Fuuinjutsu, which can be classified as an intellectual endeavor)
  • Vaanarayoothamukhyam, the one who is the chief of vanara army. (Military dictator.)
  • Atulit Bal Dhaamam, the one who is the repository of incomparable strength. (He's quite impressive in-series.)
  • Hemshailaabh Deham, the one whose body resembles a golden mountain. (Yellow features heavily in Minato's design.)
  • Danujvan Krushanum, the one who is the destroyer of forces of demons. (The Kyuubi)
  • Sakal Gun Nidhaanam, the one who is the repository of all the virtues and good qualities. (Apart from the quality of giving things cool names, Minato doesn't seem to have any real faults. [And is pretty much a Yamato Nadeshiko, in male warlord form, somehow.])
  • Sankat Mochan, the one who liberates from dangers (singlehandedly wins battles=his troops are saved from danger. Also, Kurama.)

In addition, we know Kishimoto is familiar with Hindu and buddhist mythology from Pein's abilities, which are named after the various realms in Buddhist cosmology, and in particular the King of Hell, who is Yama, the Judge of the Dead, in Hindu mythology.

Interestingly, an alternate (and more common) name of Yama is Enma, which is the name of the Monkey Boss Summon Hiruzen uses against Orochimaru. Who transforms into a staff, with dimension-changing properties near-identical with Sun Wukong's staff in the Journey to the West. And Goku's in Dragonball.

So, any thoughts?

EDIT: Made picture overview, it's huge and hard to miss and should probably be checked out first. So look down.

Hanuman also had a playful character which is more reminiscent of Hashirama's personality. Each of the characteristics of Hanuman's that you stated can be applied to most (if not all) of the main good willed character's of Naruto.

Like godlike speed, intellectual nature, command of armies, golden colour, demon vanquishing and flawless character?
