Why would Itachi go out and try and fight Pain when he is supposed to be a spy against Akatsuki? Why would he help Konoha when he is trying to get Sasuke to believe he is a bad guy against Konoha?
Why would Itachi kill Orochimaru when he is a member of Akatsuki, killing him cripples the organization. That confrontation was meant as a warning to Oro.
Again, the guy is supposed to be a spy against Akatsuki. He's supposed to be doing what he can to get his info and not blow his cover. He needed to put Kakashi down quickly so they could leave before more ninja got involved. He couldn't just run away from him since they would chase him. Against Jiraiya he could have taken him out one way or another but he chose to leave. Either he solo'd him or him and Kisame ganged up on Jiraiya and killed him that way. Why do you think Itachi didn't do that and just decided to leave?
Because he was not against Konoha.
