Today, I will be explaining how I believe Itachi Uchiha came into possession of the Legendary Weapons which are named the 'Yata Mirror' and the 'Totsuka Blade'. Please read the whole thread or skip down to the 'Conclusion' section where I will be summarizing the thread.
Basic Information:
- Itachi got the weapons from 'blank' location or person
- The person he acquired it from has a connection to Rikudō Sennin
- It is plausible that Jūbi has some sort of relationship with the two legendary weapons
- The legendary weapons are probably not limited to these two weapons with the inclusion of possibly the Sword of Kusangi
- The weapons aren't limited to Susano'o but can be wielded by a normal human as well
Explanation:
-How Itachi Uchiha Acquired the Weapons.
1. I believe that Itachi, once attaining the Mangekyō Sharingan read the Uchiha Stone Tablet. I believe that the Uchiha Stone Tablet was not limited to being hard to decipher by the Sharingan but also written in a more philosophical manner because it took several Uchiha to decipher small parts of it. Knowing Itachi, and how he was in possession of a diverse range of talents; one being his knowledge, probably understood the scripture and went to attain the two weapons, possibly to one day pass it on to Sasuke. Now this is quite a simple theory so I decided to think more into this and expand!
-Madara Uchiha & The Weapons
2. We also know that Zetsu claimed that while wielding the Yata Mirror and the Totsuka Blade, Itachi was completely invinsible. Is it mere coincidence that Black Zetsu who is Madara's will has knowledge of the Legendary Weapons? No it isn't coincidence as I am under the assumption that Madara also knew a lot about the Legendary Weapons. He probably acquired one as well - your reaction right now is that I am crazy but I believe that Madara's Gunbai is a Legendary Weapon.
Naruto, while in Bjuu Mode used a Rasengan with Kyuubi infused chakra was simply deflected by the flick of a wrist? No, any average weapon would have shattered right there; deflecting it is amazing and not a normal feature that a normal weapon should or could possess.
How could there be more than three weapons as the legendary weapons were based on the Imperial Regalia of Japan. It is quite simply if you think about it - the Totsuka Blade isn't one of the three Imperial Regalia - It is the Sword of Kusangi, The Yata Mirror and the Yasaka Magatama. The Totsuka is a variant of the Kusangi as is the Gunbai to the Yata Mirror which is why it deflected the attack with such ease.

-Orochimaru & The Weapons
3. Orochimaru is also quite knowledgeable about this, immediately recognizing the weapons so he must have also searched for it as Zetsu suggested. We also know that Orochimaru wanted to learn all ninjutsu and acquire the Sharingan. Kabuto one of Orochimaru's most loyal pupils wanted to be the next Sage of Six Paths.
I believe that Orochimaru wanted to be the next Sage as well - this is why he wants the Sharingan because he knows it can evolve into the Rinnegan. This is why he wants to learn all ninjutsu because he will be the undisputed master of the ninja world. So where does the Sage of Six Paths come in? Simple; the Sage possessed all three. Note again how Zetsu said that he (Itachi) was essentially invincible - I believe that the Sage was also practically invincible if not invincible. Orochimaru has a thing with immortality so it isn't a berserk idea to suggest he wanted to acquire these weapons as another alternative to immortality.

-The Legendary Weapons
What are they? There is the Yasaka Magatama which has no known alternative other than possibly the Susanoo Arrows but probably not; the Yata Mirror with the Gunbai as its alternative and the Totsuka Blade which is a variant of the Sword of Kusangi.
Conclusion:
- Itachi acquired the Weapons through a accurate translation of the Uchiha Stone Tablet
- There are more than three legendary weapons ; Madara's Gunbai is one of them
- The Sage of Six Paths possessed all three of the original - the weapons were forged on Juubi's chakra
