Now we know that story and character of Hashirama and Madara resemble of Naruto and Sasuke.It may be possible that Hashirama also made a promise with Madara that if they fight then they both would die.
So I think after defeating Madara ,he maybe killed himself because no one at that time was so powerful to defeat Hashirama.
