So welcome to my thread on the byakugan, this is my first thread here so bear with me if it may seem a little unstructured and poorly composed but hopefully I will get my message through at least.
First of this is theoretical complex theory and it will naturally need to be long in order to be understood. If you don't want to read please leave without informing the rest of the base of your decision with stupid posts like ”LoL Wall of text crits me and I didn't read”. Thank you.
So what I will do here is discuss my (and a few others) theory that there is more to the byakugan than we have seen so far. I will be comparing it a lot with the sharingan and also mention the rinnegan in the end. Also this is sort of an extension to certain threads already made so to keep it short I will not explain everything from this thread here as well but will instead and list what from this thread is assumed to be correct. This is the thread.
So these are some things we know.
-Byakugan and sharingan are rumored to be related.
-Sage of the six paths (SOT6P) had the rinnegan.
-Madara evolved his Rinnegan from having the sharingan.
-Sharingan is related to the SOT6P- hence the byakugan is related to SOT6P as well.
So in order to compare these two visual jutsus I will need to point out that the Sharingan has several known upgrades (2-3 tomoes>MS>EMS>Rinnegan*) The byakugan has so far only been seen in it's original form. But what if there was more to it? What if it actually has the same amount of upgrades as the sharingan? Why haven't we seen it? Well simply because this is a story about Naruto and Sasuke and their rivalry. If Hinata or Neji had developed their byakugan in the same pace as Sasuke developed his sharingan these sidecharacters would've ended up equally strong as Sasuke and therefor Naruto. This can only be true for Naruto or Sasukes obstacles and/or opponents, everyone else must be kept a step behind for the sake of the story.
But this is a rather large assumption you say? Well the thing is that Sharingan and Byakugan are polar opposites of eachother. As mentioned in the link Uchihas are often depicted with red auras and Hyugas depicted in blue auras. The hyugas have white eyes, Uchihas have black eyes. What is the sharingans weakness?
That's right fighting two opponents simultaneously. The byakugan can see attacks from all angles simultaneously which is arguably the most useful ability one can have when fighting several opponents simultaneously.
Uchihas excell in genjutsu and ninjutsu. Hyugas excel in Taijutsu.
Uchihas have a bloody, unorthodox and brutal history. Hyugas have a traditional history and their fighting style is called ”gentle fist”.
The main person in the series from the Uchiha clan is Sasuke. Sasuke's character revolves around anger, hatred and revenge. The main person of the series from the Hyuga clan is Hinata. Hinata's character revolves around love, kindness and helping others.
My point is, this is a pattern. Both are completely opposite of eachother very alike but still very different. So there isn't really any reason to why the byakugan wouldn't follow the same pattern (standard with two levels>MB>EMB>Rinnegan) that the sharingan does but in a different way especially since they both are likely relatives to the rinnegan.
But the basic sharingan has two levels, 2 tomoes and 3?
Yes, but the byakugan's basic form also have varying strengths. Hinata in part 1 was able to see the chakra pathway system. But Neji was able to see the chakra nodes themselves. Sounds like two different levels of the same dojutsu doesn't it?
The mangekyo byakugan
After this things become a little bit more tricky. We've never seen the theoretical ”mangekyo byakugan” (which it most likely woudn't be called). So how would it work? Well the Mangekyo sharingan evolves when the user is in shock after a great personal loss? In other words when the person loses something extremely important for them (Sasuke his brother, Madara killed his best friend, Obito lost Rin). So the exact opposite of that would be to gain something extremely important for you as a person. The obvious example that comes to my mind would be if Hinata received Narutos love and acceptence.
What would the MB do? I've seen many people speculating that it would enchance vision even further or more detailed etc. This is not what I beleive. MS didn't really enhance the users vision in any way, what it did was unlock new techniques for the user, there is no reason to why a grade 2 byakugan wouldn't do the same? I wouldn't be surprised if the outcome was something in the line of a chakrabased Susanoo or something similar along with a regenerative power that would be fitting as an opposite to amaterasu's destructive powers. Too much? Well it's sort of on par with Choji's butterfly mode and it's certainly not as strong as Naruto or Sasuke in their current state. So, why not?
EMS=EMB?
EMS-EMB is harder to predict how it would work but as I see it the two possible ways of interpreting the opposite of taking someone else's eyes would either be that you must receive them from someone else being the opposite of taking them from someone else. It could be something you must develop with your own eyes. Even more likely I beleive this isn't even thought out as none of the hyugas are meant to reach Sasuke's EMS powerlevel and will stay at MB.
Rinnegan?
So what about the Rinnegan then? Well we know that Madara managed to get the rinnegan with his sharingan. My personal beleif is that both Dojutsus descend from the rinnegan and that both can be ”powered up” to the rinnegan, but I doubt this is something we'll ever see.
Counter arguments
But the hyugas haven't had any attention since forever?
Well this is true. But why would you put something in the series not to use it? You really think Kishi developed the hyuga clan, a dojutsu and linked it together with the sharingan to never use it again after the chuunin exams? Isn't it more likely that there was more to it but they had to wait to power it up so they woudn't catch up to the main characters?
But the sharingan has always been stronger than the byakugan, they are not equal.
Most likely they are. The difference is that we have 1 main character/villain and three villains with the sharingan. These four are most likely the most powerful Uchihas the world has ever seen. If the avarage Uchiha went up against the avarage Hyuga it would be an even fight. Remember in part 1 when Neji was Narutos opponent, he was seriously strong back then, strong enough to give naruto a challenge and Naruto gave Sasuke a challenge.
But the series is too far progressed, there isn't even time to implement this.
There could be time, there are no confirmation of the series shutting down as it is now. But I won't deny it's possible that this was Kishi's original intentions but that it got dropped to give more attention to tha main conflict and progress things quicker.
Well these are my thoughts (and hopes) on the future of on one of the most interesting things we've seen very little of. I hope you've enjoyed the read and feel free to argue against/for the OP, fill in with things I might've missed or point out mistakes I might've made.
Special credit to: Mangekyo Muslim for giving me ideas and inspiration in the first place.
