There are many speculations and debates going on about whether or not Ashura was a jinchuuriki. I have a theory about this.

1st off: I doubt he was a jinchuuriki. Remember, his father was the 10 tails jinchuuriki which had all the bijuus (and it probably wasn't a situation like the 4th shinobi war where Madara and Obito became the juubi's jinchuurikis despite parts of Gyuuki and Kurama still being around). Therefore, there would have been no bijuu for Ashura to become the jinchuuriki of because Hagoromo already had them all inside of him.

Now here is my theory about what the avatar was:

As stated before, Hagoromo was the juubi's jinchuuriki. He most likely became the jinchuuriki before having Indra and Ashura. I think this because when Hagoromo was talking to Naruto, he first said that he and his brother fought the juubi and then he said that he later went on to have two sons of his own. Now having said that, if Hagoromo was already the juubi's jinchuuriki before Ashura's conception, then it is possible that Ashura simply inherited some bijuu chakara as an innate trait that came from being born to a jinchuuriki.

Think about Naruto for a second. Kushina was Kurama's jinchuuriki and as a result, Naruto already had whiskers at birth even before Kurama was sealed inside of him. Clearly, babies born from jinchuurikis can be affected by the bijuu. Therefore it is not far fetched to say that Ashura simply inherited some bijuu chakara as his innate trait upon his conception.

Now you may argue two points:

1. Kushina was a female who actually gave birth to Naruto. Hagoromo was not a woman.
2. If this was the case, then why didn't Indra inherit this power?

Now here are my answers to these points:

1. It was never actually stated that the woman had to be the jinchuuriki for the baby to be affected. It is possible that bijuu chakara could affect a male's gametes and as a result, still affect the baby within the woman.

2. Indra may have just simply not inherited this power. That is all. Think about genetics. If one of your parents has a certain trait, then that doesn't necessarily guarantee that you will get it. Heck, you could get some other trait that your parent had or you could even simply take after your other parent. Besides, I could reverse the logic of asking why Indra didn't inherit bijuu chakara by asking why Ashura didn't inherit the sharingan or why Hamura didn't get rinnegan.

So that is my theory. In short, Ashura was not a jinchuuriki. He just inherited some bijuu chakara.

Good theory! I guess being the son of a jinchuuriki has its perks.

Hardly a theory when that's what actually happened (factual).

He inherited his dad's senjustu "body."

Obito stated that his body was the same as the sage as soon as he became juubi jinchuuriki.

You just actually bothered to read the manga properly, that's why you're correct.

i agree as his avatar looks different from naruto's in a few areas, mostly the face.
