Gai for example could break Kabuto's wide genjutsu range in part1, yet he feared Kakashi's genjutsu to the point he developed a fighting style against it, just like the genjutsu to inflect subjective thoughts that he used on Zabuza, as well as the genjutsu to make the Anbus who were watching Naruto fall asleep, plus like in the current war where he stalemated Obito

I was really impressed when he countered Obito's Genjutsu. Most people pas that off as them having the same eye though.

You're mistaking here. He didn't only counter Obito's genjutsu. They were challenging each other in genjutsu(something different), but it always ended in a stalemate, evidenced by the fact Kakashi's illusion was combatting Obito's, a little bit like the first phase of battle between Sasuke and Itachi in shippuden for example
