Interesting theory.
The Uzumaki clan is awesome
Konoha just let the shrine with those powerfull artifacts go to waste like that?
Naruto should have been searching and finding those places a long time ago

Intriguing that the Leaf let the Uzumaki Shrine go into such disrepair and that another piece of Naruto's past is not given to him. As much as they honor the Land of Eddies, Konoha sure is hiding a lot in regards to them.
I too am wondering about the other half of Kurama's chakra and if it was released. Did everything the Reaper seal become released or just what Oro wanted? Questions, questions, questions...

This theory seems to be plausible due to my recollection in previous manga on Uzumaki Clan as one of most feared clans due their sealing techniques and now their village is destroyed.

Great thread but unfortunately, I have to correct you on the torii account. It has nothing to do with the Ise Shrine (Ise Jingū).

It's not an ise torii. It's a shinmei torii.

The ise torii traditionally has a pentagonally cut kusagi and the edges have a slight upward slant. Kusagi is the beam on the very top.
This is what an ise torii looks like. You can clearly see the shape of the kusagi (top beam) which is cut in a pentagonal manner and the rectangular nature of its beams. The ise torii is considered as a sub category of the shinmei torii.

The one Kishi used in the manga is the basic shinmei torii which has round beams instead of rectangular ones.

The one in the Uzumaki temple and the ones that Naruto used to seal Kurama are both shinmei torii.

I was actually leaning between the two when making the theory and I decided to make a judgment call. Since they are a part of the same family, the image may have been altered during the RAW cleaning process and the other similarities between Ise Shrine I decided to go with Ise Torii.

Torii's aside there are quite a few similarities between Ise and the Uzumaki Shrine and also between Ise City and Konoha.

The black flames inside the temple are obviously a hint at Amaterasu.

Ise was created when the Uji and Yamada villages combined, Konoha was created when the Senju and Uchiha combined.

Ise has two main shrines located a little over three miles apart. Naka and the Mask Shrine seem to be a similar distance apart.

I do still think that it is the Naruto worlds version of Ise Shrine.

Personally I believe something else.

I believe that only 1 mask is real (the one that Orochimaru took) and serves the purpose to undo the Reaper Seal, the 26 other mask are probably dummys and end up killing the user.

1 mask for undoing the Reaper Seal, 26 mask´s to prevent foreigners to gain this power. That would explain why the shrine was easy to find..even if someone would know what this 1 mask can do he wouldnt risk his life to find the right mask out of the 27.

And following japanese mythology Itachi didnt get the legendary items himself. These items are said to pick their wielders themself (only people with a pure heart). You cant find them yourself, atleast if Kishi sticks to this mythology stuff.
However that would explain why Orochimaru (the smartest person in Narutoverse who knows pretty much everything) couldnt find any of the items.

There's more than one Shinigami in Japanese folklore (eg. Bleach) unlike the western concept of the sole entity known as "The Grim Reaper" personifying death, so it's entirely plausible that the 26 other masks were also used for Shiki Fuujin or some other Uzumaki jutsu.

I am more inclined towards this thought. I also find it hard to believe that the Uzumaki clan possessed such great items only to be left to rot. It makes a lot more sense for one mask to have special properties. The 26 others are there for decoration/confusion.
