~The Uzumaki Shrine, the 27 masks and their potential use in the future~

The gate from chapter 617:

We now know that it's a gate for a Uzumaki shrine

The gate is a Torii, specifically it's an Ise Torii.

Ise Torii/Ise Shrine

Ise torii are gates found only at the Inner Shrine and Outer Shrine at Ise Shrine. This style started becoming more popular during the early 20th century at the time of State Shinto because they were considered the oldest and most prestigious. Ise Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to goddess Amaterasu. The Inner Shrine, Naikū, is located in the town of Uji-tachi, south of central Ise City, and is dedicated to the worship of Amaterasu. It's the home of the Sacred Mirror (Yata no Kagami), the shrine is one of Shinto's holiest and most important sites.

I believe that the Uzumaki Shrine is Ise Shrine, My proof:

The black flames inside the shrine

Ise Shrine is dedicated to the worship of Amaterasu and the Uzumaki Shrine has black flames. I think that this was done intentionally and the shrine is the Naruto worlds version of Ise Shrine.

Yata no Kagami

In real life the Ise shrine is said to be the home of the Sacred Mirror (Yata no Kagami). In the manga this is one of Itachi Uchiha's weapons. It's an indestructible shield that can block any attack. The question here is can I link Itachi to the Uzumaki shrine where he would have obtained the shield.

Look behind Itachi in the top left panel, it's an Ise Torii.

As stated above the Ise Torii style are only found at Ise Shrine.

Also the path that Orochimaru and Itachi are on resemble the steps at Ise Shrine:

This explains where Itachi got the Yata Mirror and how Orochimaru knew about the location of the Shrine.

The 27 Masks use in the future:
I think the shrine's future impact lies in the other 26 masks:
You must be registered for see images

I think It's possible that each mask is linked to a separate power and putting on the mask creates a contract with the spirit (Possibly a Kami) inhabiting the mask.

Maybe Itachi used one of the masks to create a contract and awaken the Yata Mirror and Minato and Sarutobi used the "Reaper Mask" to create a contract with the Reaper. If this is true then each mask would most likely contain completely different powers.

The Shrine may even have magical properties so that when the person who formed a contract dies the mask is returned to the shrine.

It's possible that the remaining masks will be used in the future and may be used to give Naruto a power-up if he looses the fox or maybe after Sasuke goes to the battlefield Orochimaru could return to the shrine, then use all of the masks and gain enough power to become the final villain.

Nice research. Interesting indeed. My only question is if, according to your theory, each mask contains such a power and if previous Hokages knew about it, then why would they be laying around in rubble? I'd imagine they'd have collected them and stored them somewhere safe. Seems rather irresponsible to let them be out in the open.

AWESOME theory :y.
I cant really add much to it.
Thanks and rep :).

The Uzumaki and the Uchiha seem to be more linked than we thought it seems, with the shared amaterasu flames.

Minato has them too btw on his Hokage cape and we know how he uses lot of his wifes powers, like seals and other stuff, which is Uzumaki related.

I agree.

Overall nice work > though I doubt it.

The connection from Uchiha to Amaterasu is clear... but: I don't get why the Uzumaki should worship Amaterasu...???

Also there are many places in Japan with Ise toori style gates. You find even smaller versions in parks and gardens.
I don't think that Kishis wanted to implement something special with the broken gate at the Uzumaki shrine.

Very nice theory. :y :y :y
Also did you notice this?

The Uzumaki Torii structure and the Torii Seal. Kurama also implied that the Torii Seal belonged to Rikudou Sennin.

And look at this one:
You must be registered for see images

If you look closely, those same Uzumaki spirals occurred on the KCM shroud. That's means they have more connection to Rikudou Sennin than we thought based on the abilties they carry.

It's no coincidence that the Uzumaki had their symbols on the Torii Seal and the Torii structure near their shrine.

But then again, well thought out theory on your part. Repped and thanked you for the thread.

I was actually wondering this since the most recent chapter, whether each mask has some sort of demon connected to it or if they are decoys to hide the death god. Now I'm thinking it's the former :)

Uhm, you did a great job in researching everything, however, do not get confused. Kishi doesn't follow any specific religious confinement. He only uses the names, but the order, which they are used in, doesn't resemble the religious stories. Thus this type of argumentation is likely to be invalid.

Also I think the evidence for the Ise Tori behind Itachi on top of the stairs is quite vague. Kishi doesn't think that much into things anyway. We have seen Ise Tori's before. Especially in filler arcs, etc., and Kishi does have to say OK for the fillers. I don't think they serve any greater purpose.

If Kishi truly had a purpose with it, he would show the Tori's more clearly, and give them more detail, instead of placing fat Orochimaru in front of it every time..

Also the part about the masks seem odd. I am certain that Kushina said that she taught Minato the death reaper seal, if you look in the part, where Naruto meets her. Besides, if they had a contract with it, they could just summon it.
Also the last important part is that Oro and co. needed to go down to the Uzumaki shrine to use it. Why is that? I believe it has a purpose. Sasuke already knows, what the tablet says, so it can't be for that.. So overall, good job, but seems too fishy for me.

:hint:Great stuff , rep.

This chapter left me with a whole lot of questions:
  • What if the flames in the background aren't black?
  • What if there are 27 different shinigami? And each of those masks is a tool for summoning a specific Shinigami. Would make sense for Oro to be so specific about the mask he chose. Seeing as his real objective was to retrieve his arms. On the other hand, the others could simply be fakes used to conceal the real one but still, that didn't leave Oro scratching his head for even a moment.
  • Did Oro have a choice of whether to release the ex-Hokages when he released his arms?
  • Did the Hokages go to the Pure world before being summoned?
  • Was the spiritual energy portion of the Kyuubi's chakra that Minato sealed into the belly of the shinigami also inadvertently released when Oro cut open the belly?
p.s. Those masks kinda remind me of the Gin-Kin brothers...and Ukon and Sakon.

Edit: Minato also had similar flame patterns on his Hokage coat.
