The Uzumaki Clan was inspired from one of the four ancient sacerdotal (priestly) clans of Japan: The Urabe Clan of Tsushima Island:

Tsushima Island is an isolated island situated near the Tsushima Strait between the borders of Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

Much like Uzushiogakure which is an isolated island located in the Land of Eddys:

The now extinct Urabe Clan was an ancient priestly clan who practiced a form of Shintoism known as "Ryobu Shinto" also known as "dual aspect Shinto". The term refers to the mixing of Shintoism with Buddhism and Confucianism, incorporating concepts like Samsara, Nirvana, Dharma, Bodhisattva, etc.

But what made the Urabe Clan famous was their particular type of mystic skill: the esoteric form of tortoiseshell divination known as Kiboku

Kiboku is done by placing magic seals (Machigata) on the underside of tortoiseshell fragments

Much like the Uzumaki Clan who were known for their Sealing Jutsus:

The Urabe Clan was so famous for their divination skills that they were imported from their island into the mainland and appointed to the Department of Divinities (Jingi-kan) of the Imperial Court.

Like the Uzumaki Clan who was invited to forge an alliance with Konoha:

and imported Kushina to become Kurama's Jinchuuriki:

The present day shrines of Tsushima Island are known for their Kagura Ritual Performances:

The Uzumaki Kagura Mask that was found in the Uzumaki Mask Temple is specifically a Hannya Mask:

The Hannya Mask (般若) takes it's name from the Sino-Japanese word for prajna or wisdom, the mask was named as such because the Perfection Sutras (Hannya Scroll) were effective against demons.

The Prajnaparamita or the Hannya-Haramitta speaks of the Six Perfections to become a Bodhisattva aka a Sage, a Sennin

The Six Perfections Are:

1. Dāna pāramitā: generosity
2. Śīla pāramitā : virtue
3. Kṣānti (kshanti) pāramitā : patience
4. Vīrya pāramitā : diligence
5. Dhyāna pāramitā : contemplation
6. Prajñā pāramitā : wisdom, insight

He who has followed the Six Perfections becomes a Bodhisattva, a Sennin.

The Bodhisattva then has mastery of the Six Realms/Paths also known as Rokudō 六道

1. Naraka Path
2. Preta Path
3. Animal Path
4. Asura Path
5. Human Path
6. Deva Path

Much like Rikudou Sennin who is the Sage of the Six Paths:

And an Uzumaki.
