None of them were idiots... that's the point of brainwashing. You can't make someone who's too intelligent work for your shitty, twisted plan. You need to psychologically manipulate them into it, otherwise they'll see through it. I would say BZ was too intelligent/smart for Madara to become suspicious of BZ. Madara was not a fool. He invested his efforts for a long term plan like performing IT to control the world & got success in it so He is not fool. But BZ tricked him & 1-shot him in 1 panel in manga.
