I'd like to hear from other people on this. Was the Uchiha genocide the right thing to do or not? I think it was because who knows what would've happened if they would have attacked that night?

Well, 'something' had to happen, I think massacre is a bit to far...but they are ninja and they deal in death... so I guess a 'justified' act for people who throw sharp star shaped objects at each other, and shoot fire and all sorts of base elements at each other during even normal escalated conversation.

Why are you all soo against the Uchiha?

We found out in the manga, they are like this because they were following the Uchiha Stone Tablet which Black Zetsu had altered to his own liking.

Also, IF it were the right thing to do. Why not just kill the uchiha shinobi? Why kill the normal citizens ....they didnt even know how to properly defend themselves let alone fight. Every village has its villagers and its shinobi. They are different separate entities. U_U

I believe that the massacre was a far better option than the Uchiha's coup de'tat, but it had its negative effects. Sasuke became revenge driven, and that made way for some other events, like the attack on the Kage Summit.

I think it wasn't justifiable, just because Hiruzen never tried to work on other alternatives, such as a talk with Uchihas or something of sorts. Similar is true in case of Itachi, mistake that he accepted later on(doing everything on his own).:p
It was last resort in my opinion. Wars/Massacres aren't justifiable no matter how brutal the verse is, unless and until there is no alternative.

There is always an alternative unless and untill people r blind towards it.

It was a totally messed up situation and the massacre was the route with least casualties. Had they did the coup, the Uchiha would have died and some of the leaf shinobi would have have died as well.

Anyway it shouldnt have happened, it was the Uchiha, Danzo, Hiruzen, Itachi and Obito's fault.

No in some cases, if things go too extreme one has to think about going for violence. In Mahabharata, even lord Krishna convinced Arjuna to kill his cousins.
It was War between two oppsing forces.
War always leads to violence.
@bold:end result pandavas got doomed themself
Uchiha's were citizen of konaha.

As Hokage, Hiruzen's duties were to protect all the villagers. This "otherism" and marginalization of the Uchiha didn't help matters and Hiruzen seemed indifferent about the whole situation. Hiruzen could've come down hard on Danzo. Had their actually been a coup, Hiruzen could've taken out Fugaku and negotiated a peace. The Uchiha was not a clan of hundreds. Probably only several dozen. Hiruzen was just a weak Hokage. If any of the other clans (Inuzuka, Hyuga, Abarame, Yamanaka etc) had planned a coup; would Hiruzen's actions have been to stand by and let them be slaughtered? The Uchiha Massacre sets an ugly precedent and stains Hiruzen's whole tenure as Kage.

One thing I never understood: The villagers/konoha higher ups suspected the uchiha were behind the 9 tails incident? So if they were so suspicious, why not have the Yamanaka clan read their minds one by one to see if the did it. I mean, the Uchiha didn't do it, so it's not like they had anything to hide. Hiruzen was a brain dead fool, as was Itachi.

Ouch. I never thought of that. We saw during the Kisame interrogation, that Yamanaka ninja can reach back years to extract information. That is a plot hole you can drive a train through.

Well that would have been dangerous and would have roused up the Uchiha even more. It would have blatantly been saying we dont trust you. Also the Uchiha were planning a coup and Yamanaka would have found out.

It's obvious that Hiruzen was concerned little beyond his little group of friends that made up the council, and didn't let Tobirama's tolerance torch flicker even a little. The way he offered an innocent man's head following Hinata's kidnapping, didn't do anything for the Branch Family, and didn't lift the age long surveillance and segregation on Uchiha Clan clearly shows his impartiality.

What a Hokage, this guy was.
