The masked man posed as Madara stated he had a hatred for both the uchiha and the village and was plotting his revenge and Because back then we believed (most of us) this was Madara's state of mind through both the evidence of the scan above and obitos crooked version to sasuke :

But in the recent manga specifically today we see madara as a person that still loved the Uchiha and worried about their future despite they're betrayal and mistrust of him:

So why was the Uchiha massacre orchestrated and participated in by Madara's very own apprentice Obito uchiha, originally I saw it as part of the plan but recent manga chapters have proved Madara's feelings. It's not a secret that Obito has his own plan excluding Madara regarding the moons eye and juubi revival :

My theory for now is that Madara does not know that Tobi assisted in the massacre of the Uchiha and this act was never included in the original plan. if this is true the implications of this are numerous including a can of whoop ass for Obito from Madara who just needs a reason or that obito is far more evil and selfish than Madara in his motivations and possibly the final villian.:devil:

Obito doesn't need Madara as much as Madara needs him.
So I can see him disobeying and possibly dealing with Madara in the coming chapters.
Either Obito, Orochimaru, and possibly Sasuke will be the final villain.

During the masacre obito would have had time to investigate the stone tablet, even though he didn't have the rinnegan and therefore couldn't read the entire thing it could still have been useful to him in some way to read it

My question is that was this a step that was necessary in Madara's plan? I doubt it based on his words in today's manga.

madara doesn't think obito as a pet or something, obito could do what ever he wants and i think killing the uchiha was on their plan because if the war started the uchiha would be the troublesome first na mean? because uchiha was one of the strongest ninja's of the leaf just by seeing them in the battlefield right now, would shake the guts of obito and you know why did obito went back and atack the leaf? because of them the uchiha clan he went back to kill them making itachi choose wats right and wrong and 234256346745yterfdgfsdgfsde

Possible, but it can go either way. To love someone that strongly and have them turn their backs to you can lead people to doing crazy things. They don't think rationally.
