A lot of them hate it because they don't understand it or even want to understand it. If you're cornered and afraid of something you lash out.

Humans are creatures of habit. Stereotypes don't help. A lot of people find out their friend is gay. "Omg. What if they've just been trying to sleep with me thus whole time."

People are old-fashioned, un-familiar and want to appear macho. Some reilgious people just view it as evil.

If you support laws that are designed to prevent the expression of homosexuality in places that aren't any of your business (i.e. anywhere that isn't your house) then you're a homophobe. Anything more extreme than this, such as supporting violence against homosexuals, also qualifies.

If you say the word "gay" derisively, you're not a homophobe, you're just daft. If you call people British slang for a cigarette, you're a douche and either 12 or never graduated from the mentality of a twelve year old.

If you make faces when you see two people of the same *** kissing in public, you're kind of a prick. If you just get grossed out, you're just a bit old-fashioned.

If you think homosexuality is intrinsically hilarious, regardless of context, you're annoying.
