Basic Information

Name: Joel
Nickname: N/A
Gender: Male ♂
Age: Late 40s
Clan: Gyojin

"I struggled for a long time with survivin', and no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for."
Looks

Joel's appearance indicates that he is in his late 40s. He has a heavy build, with dark hair and beard. He appears to be between 5 feet 10in (177.8cm) and 5 feet 11in (180.3cm) tall. Joel has many cuts and scars, which can be seen on his face and arms as a result of the harsh environments he's lived in. Joel wears a watch that was a gift from Sarah for his birthday the day before the genocide; twenty years later, it has broken, likely from two decades of surviving in the wild. He keeps the watch in remembrance of Sarah. Joel seems to sigh sadly when Ellie mentions that it is broken. Joel also looks down at the watch when Ellie was mentioning how beautiful the view was to Joel as they were about to leave. Joel slightly rubs his watch after he said he "struggled for a long time with survivin'" as he encountered major difficulties in accepting Sarah's death and sympathizes with Ellie's survivor's guilt.

He is most notably shown in a green checkered collared shirt, which is rolled up to his elbows, and jeans. Like Ellie, he also changes his appearance slightly in accordance to the seasons (e.g. in the winter, Joel is seen in a different shirt and a coat). Due to his rigorous living conditions and training, Joel's body is heavy with muscle, contributing to his gruff and hardened appearance.
Personality

Joel has been described as a "violent thug, a brutal killer, and a torturer." He is shown to be able to kill his enemies with noteworthy brutality, earning his infamous reputation to those he encounters. David calls him a "crazy man." During the aftermath of the epidemic that struck the country, he has resorted to working in black-market dealings and smuggling items or people of interest through quarantine zones or other designated areas. Because of this, he has accumulated valuable knowledge in regards to surviving desolate environments. Ellie notes that Joel has stained his hand with innocent blood when he reveals to her that he has been "on both sides", thus having the knowledge about a hunters' ambush and anticipating it. This dark past likely contributed to his experience as a hardened survivalist. Over time, he has begun to become less bound by morality and more driven by doing whatever is necessary to survive.

He also becomes extremely dedicated to Ellie, using any means possible to save her and keep her safe. He tortures several cannibals to find out Ellie's location, and then kills the other prisoner after he has gained information about Ellie's location. Ellie also cares greatly for Joel when she cares for him when he was injured, just as Joel cared for her and protected her throughout their journey. They had a father and daughter bond.

However, Joel's other side is also portrayed. Prior to the genocide, he worked hard to single-handedly raise his daughter. The outbreak and Sarah's death changed him into an apathetic, ruthless, and estranged man. He wears the watch that Sarah gave him the day before the initial infection broke out as a reminder. Upon meeting Ellie, he originally has a rocky relationship with her. However, Joel later grows to trust her and finds her reliable at most times such as Ellie spotting for Joel or providing support. As time passes, Joel establishes a father-daughter relationship with Ellie, reminding him of his beloved daughter, Sarah.

He is cynical and gruff and, while nearly as foul-mouthed as Ellie is, his speech is almost always blunt and rude. He was this way towards Ellie, stating he could "two shits" about her and what she does, but later becomes very attached and protective of her.

Background Information

History

The Last of Us
Joel was born in Kiragakure, a few years before he genocide on those with Kekkei Genkai began. Raised from a child to hide his Gyojin heritage, Joel hadn't become a ninja and instead became a normal citizen. He lived this way up to his 20s, having a normal family in the form of his daughter Sarah. Joel lived in a small part of the Kirgakure, in a modest house working with the village's carpentry teams. He was one of many who dreamed of creating a bridge to the other nations. This simple life soon ended however.

One night, after arriving home late, Joel found Sarah sleeping on the couch. She woke up, and the exhausted Joel sprawled ont othe couch. She reminded him it was his birthday and gave him a watch due to his complaints that his old one had broken. After a quick joke about it being broken to tease Sarah, they started watching TV together. Sarah soon fell asleep. Joel carried her to her bedroom, and left her to sleep in peace. Her sleep was soon interrupted however by her radio going off. Answering, she found it was her uncle Tommy, Joel's brother, who was urgently asking to speak to Joel. Before Sarah could answer she didn't know where he was, the signal cut off. Sarah left the room looking for her father when a nearby explosion went off, startling the young girl. She went downstairs and after searching the house for her father, he came running in through a side door, covered in blood. Joel warned Sarah to stay away from the doors and windows, asking if anyone came in. Just as Sarah answered no and asked why someone would, their neighbor broke through the door in a feral state. Joel warned him to stay back, holding a kunai in hand. When the neighbor attacked, Joel stabbed him, killing him. Stunned and scared, Joel urged Sarah out of the house to meet up with Tommy. The trio rushed through the section of the village they lived in, with Sarah being injured. Her leg broken, Joel carried her as Tommy protected them. Surrounded by more and more feral people attacking others and destruction as people panicked and ran, the trio were utterly confused. Unfortunately, Joel and Tommy were separated, with Tommy volunteering to hold back some ferals as Joel and Sarah ran. Joel and Sarah were almost caught by two ferals when an ANBU ninja killed them. As Joel began to plead for help, the ninja pointed his weapons at the man and his daughter, while radioing in to his superior. Reluctantly, after a brief argument, he launched his weapons at Joel and Sarah. Joel quickly turned to protect his daughter, getting grazed by some of the shuriken. He collapsed as the ANBU approached him to strike again, but was killed by Tommy who wielded shuriken of his own. Seemingly saved, Tommy cried out. Joel turned to see Sarah laying on the ground, covering a wound. Struck by the shuriken, the girl cried out in a pain as Joel approached her and tried to stop the bleeding. Trying to assure Sarah she'd be okay despite the pain, she died in a weeping Joel's arms.

Joel and Tommy later found out that the event was caused by the village's genocide on those with Kekkei Genkais. The area Joel lived in became a common spot for hiding wielders of Kekkei Genkai. The village's government developed a poison that, when ingested, caused those to become "infected," with a fungus growing on their brains that caused them to go feral, insane, and extremely violent, attacking anyone nearby. The goal was to create what would seem like an outbreak of a natural disease that would eliminate the Kekkei Genkai users in the area. Knowing they were found out and couldn't live in the village any longer, Joel and Tommy fled as soon as they could, and resided in the Water Country, outside of the village. Doing whatever it took to survive, Joel and Tommy spent the next 15-20 years together, with Joel taking care of Tommy. They went separate ways at some point. During the 20 years, Joel underwent rigorous training in every art he could come across, becoming a ruthless and strong fighter who did whatever it takes to survive. During this time, Joel met a woman named Tess, also a victim of the outbreak, and they became partners, both to survive and romantically for a period of time.

20 years later, Joel and Tess settled in a small near desolate town, lacking the resources to escape poverty and the country. Tess was notably injured, and when Joel demanded an explanation, she revealed she was performing a deal exchange when she was jumped by the goons of Robert, a fellow smuggler. Joel and Tess then decided to find and kill him together. They shortly did so, but not before finding out he sold all of their weapons to a group of mercenaries named the Fireflies. Joel and Tess find the leader of the Fireflies, a woman named Marlene. She offered to give them their weapons back in exchange for a smuggling job: Smuggling a girl named Ellie to their base near Kirigakure. Initially reluctant, Joel was convinced by Tess, stating they needed those weapons for raids. Insisting that the reason they were smuggling her be kept secret when Joel asked, he told Ellie he could give two shits about what she was involved in. Joel took Ellie to his and Tess' residence for the night, starting their journey in the morning. Along the way, they find out Ellie is infected with the outbreak from 20 years ago, but is immune, and the Fireflies medical ninja seek to develop a cure from it. Joel, being cynical, didn't believe, but was convinced by Tess to go through with it after she revealed she got infected while they were fighting off other infected. Saying this could be a step in them being able to properly escape the infested parts of the country they lived in, Tess stayed behind to die; Joel and Ellie continued. Joel is extremely cold to Ellie, not speaking much to her and rudely telling her to keep their pasts to themselves. Joel and Ellie meet up with Bill, an old smuggler Joel knows, and they fight off infected and bounty hunters together. Bill sees that Joel is warming up to the girl, and warns him attachments will get him killed.

After Ellie saves Joel's life, the two become very close, with Joel and Ellie being protective of each other. Soon, Joel sees Ellie as a friend, and not as something he must smuggle, genuinely caring about her and her survival. After Joel is almost fatally injured, Ellie nurtures him, keeping him alive. While out during the winter hunting, Ellie encountered two fellow refugees. She ordered one to go back to the settlement and bring her some medicine, intending to use it on Joel. The leader of the two men, David, agreed in exchange for some of the deer she killed. While waiting, they were attacked by infected men, but managed to hold them off. David then revealed he was the leader of a group of hunters, and that Ellie and Joel had killed their friends. Ellie responded with hostility, but David let her go. She returned to Joel, and found that David's men had followed her. Ellie leaves Joel to fend them off, but is kidnapped by them. Joel then gets up and goes looking for her, despite his weakened state. After killing many of David's men, he finds Ellie hacking away at David with a machete, apparently defending herself. Joel grabs the startled girl, and she freaks out. He calms her down, and she begins to say "He tried to...," referring to David attempting to rape her before she killed him, but she cannot finish. Joel calms her down, comforts her, and calls her "baby girl," affirming his view of her as his daughter. He promises he will never let what happened here happen again, and they left together, continuing their journey.

Other
Water Release
Being a Gyojin, Joel has a natural affinity towards Water Relase. He can perform all water techniques with no more than a single handseal and with great speed. He is currently attempting to fully master his Gyojin affinity.

Wind Release
Joel's secondary elemental specialty. He is capable of performing wind techniques faster than most ninja.

Physical Capabilities
Due to his Gyojin heritage and his rigorous living environments, Joel is at the peak of physical condition. Heavy with muscle, he has higher resilience, pain tolerance, strength and fighting prowess than many ninja. At first living with a lack of formal training, Joel focused on hand-to-hand combat, mastering Taijutsu for the sake of fighting other refugees for survival. Joel is a Taijutus specialist, mastering the Way of the Tomahawk fighting style(giving him tracking speed higher than that of the average Taijutsu specialist) and is an honorary Warrior Monk, giving him heightened strength.
