From what i know there are no bigger difference between the Juubi and the tailed beasts physical attributes, they are Chackra Entities.
So if we look at when Minato sealed Half the 9-tails chackra into his own body. Half of the ninetails body dissapered into Minato.
The story we know about The SOT6P is that he sealed the juubi inside his body and became the jinchuuriki of it. And then he lived his life until old age where he was to weak to contain the Juubi in himself. I believe the Juubi corrupted the SOT6P and he was to weak to contain the full power of the Juubi.
Here comes my theory: So he Split up the Juubi Chakra (Like Minato did) into Yin and Yang.
He then Split up the Yang chackra into nine parts and created the 9 different Tailed Beast.
But he was to weak to do anything with the Yang Chackra, so he used his own body as a Chibuka Tensei Attractor and flew up in the sky and formed the Moon.
The reason why i belive it is because The Juubi DID NOT have any body left... he was a chackra entity that was inside SOT6P body. So there was nothing there to seal into the moon.
Also: continuing on my other thread: Shinsuusenju = Gedo Mazo?
After the battle between hashirama and Madara. Madara succeded into getting enough DNA to form a clone of hashirama. He used this clone to create (Let´s call it the Senju-Chakra-Plant)
Madara also inserted Senju DNA into himself, therefore unlocking the Rinnegan.
With the Rinnegan he was able to summon the Body of the SOT6P from the moon and he put the Body inside the Senju-Chakra-plants flower bud.
Now we must remember that the Shinsuusenju MIGHT be Hashiramas Main summon, so naturally when the Hasharima brain-dead clone. fills up the flower with chackra it naturally grows around SOT6P as a Shinsuusenju clone.
OR: Madara used Genjutsu on the Hashiramas Clone and made it do the seal to summon a Shinsuusenju, But it´s only a weak clone so it takes a loong time to complete it, that´s why its way smaller than the real Shinsuusenju.
But also: remember that The Juubi is a corrupt being and that is why the Gedo Mazo looks like Shinsuusenju smaller, evil little brother.

This is why the Gedo Mazo is a perfect container for the 9 tailed beasts and why it kept Madara alive - It wants to have the Tailed beasts back into his body so he can be all powerfull again. And thanks to it already having the core of the SOT6P, who already is a used container of the Juubi it works really well in gathering all the tailed beasts again.
So, This MIGHT mean that when the Shinobi-Alliance defeats the Juubi.. They might encounter... that´s right The original SOT6P.

The Deathbed might be a metaphor. Meaning naming a successor was the last thing he did before he used the Chibuka tensei.
