Sound is composed of 'waves' that vibrate the air at varying frequencies. At certain frequencies these 'waves' becoming perceptible to the ear and are interpreted by the brain as what we call sound. Sound is able to travel through any state, liquid, gas as well as solids. In liquids and gases sound waves are longitudinal and through solids are transverse waves. Certain creatures/beings ears are attuned to different ranges of frequencies, deeming them unable to hear sounds outside of these specific frequency ranges. The human ear can monitor sounds between the ranges of 20 hz - 20,000 hz. (hz= Hertz, the measurement of sound frequencies. And yes, I wiki'd the human frequency range xD)
Sound Release in Naruto is a gift that ninja can possess which allows them to create the aforementioned soundwaves through the use of chakra, being able to freely manipulate the pitches and frequencies that the sound is released at. By manipulating these waves in the air users are able to create sounds of certain pitches, but are also able to use the vibrations in the air as a physical force, giving the waves a substance as they travel through the air. As much as I'm not sure, I'd assume due to the rapid vibrating nature of sound and it's sheer speed of movement that it is made up of the Wind and Lightning style releases. As far as it's weaknesses go, again I'm not sure. I'd say wind is a weakness of sound as it can change the speed or what not of the vibrations in the air, stopping the sound waves completely as it's saps momentum. The sheer mass of earth too would be effective as it's density would make it hard for sound to travel through, although it is known that sound can travel through any substance, it is only in it's transverse form that it travels through solids; therefore, unless the sound is created directly for this purpose Earth should stop it with relative ease.
It was introduced in the Chuunin Exam arc I believe through the use of Team Dosu, two of the three members of the team had however had their bodies modified in some way to enhance their abilities with the release. These were: Dosu, a man whom had his arm modified to produce sound waves that affected the inner ear of the opponent, damaging them from the inside. Kin, a woman whom used sound based genjutsu in order to set up further attacks, her genjutsu were initiated by a set of bells she had that would ring at a precise pitch to effect the brain. Zaku, a man whom had hollow tubes inserted within his arms that released sound infused with air pressure, the pressure of which was controlled by his chakra. His sound was given a more physical substance and was used to impact the opponent physically rather than mentally.
The only member of the sound five to actually utilize sound based attacks was Tayuya (whom as you know I will be using in the not too distant future.), Tayuya's method of using the release was through the use of a flute. By playing the flute in different melodies and at different pitches she could change the effects it had. These ranged from Sound based genjutsu to controlling her Doki (Giant ogre-like creatures attuned to the flute, different notes move different parts of their body). I believe she is the last sound user.

Good. Also, Sakon was capable of using sound release as well. He was shown to do so against Sasuke.

As mentioned before this would come through means very much like the creation of lightning or wind. The user would channel chakra throughout their bodies, causing it to vibrate quicker and quicker until it reaches outrageous speeds, then releasing the chakra in 'waves' the vibrating waves would vibrate the air (or whatever surface they are travelling through) around them as they travelled causing ripples in the air. These ripples form echoes and by changing the speed of the vibration in the sound waves one can change the frequency and pitch of the sounds created.
So, is wind not a weakness of sound then? I'd hate to continue with such a basic hole in my knowledge xD

No, wind is a weakness. Just wanted you to understand that earth and water can stop sound as well, but depending on the technique used by the opponent, using those two could do more harm to you than good.

So I want you to try to produce sound by vibrating the air around you so that you can get used to it. By the end of it, you should be quite dizzy. If you know/understand why you would be dizzy, tell me.

I begin by channeling chakra around my body, allowing it to build up speed before releasing it into the air around me. Once the chakra is in the air I continue to manipulate it, forcing it to continue building up speed in the air as it cuts through the atmosphere. Then, taking note from my lightning training I begin to manipulate the already extremely quick chakra to vibrate. Using the momentum it has already built up to make the vibrations even more aggressive. The chakra vibrations create a ripple like effect in the air around me and the air itself begins to vibrate with it. The vibrations in the air create soundwaves which I can manipulate the pitch of by altering the frequency at which my chakra vibrates. Starting of with a low volume I gradually build the amount of chakra I use in this process, allowing my body to grow accustomed to the sounds around me, stopping occasionally to let the dizziness subside.
I do know the effect you mean but it's one of those things that I can't put into words. Like, in my head it's there... but I can't make sense of it in words

Following the same routine as the previous training routine I manipulate my chakra in the air, making it vibrate as it travels quickly around my body. By lowering the speed of vibrations in my chakra I create a sound with lower pitch, this sound moves slower than a default sound but holds more of a solid, brute force. A low pitched sound wave will deflect large objects and will bounce from walls. These sound waves tend to cover a larger surface area, however, this is not always the case.
By speeding up the vibrations in my chakra I create a higher pitched sound wave. High pitched sound waves holds more of a shattering, piercing quality than a low pitched one. It travels through the air at extreme speeds and cuts through solids in the same way that lightning does.

More associated in my view with the wind part of sound.
Can induce nausea and dizziness within the ear.

Takes more of lightnings piercing properties.
Can deafen and produce a loud ringing in the ear.

After being thrown into the lake I surface, take one deep breath and drop my head under water. Looking downwards I channel chakra into my vocal chords, upon building up enough chakra I release a burst of sound from my mouth. As the sound escapes my lips the water before me begins to ripple violently creating a clearly visible circular path through the before calm water. As the water ripples from the vibrations violent waves are created on the surface of the lake. Pleased with my results I surface once more and begin to swim toward land. When I reach the land I stand up and await your kunai. With the kunai flying through the air I channel chakra to my throat once more, this time releasing it with a scream, as the scream escapes my mouth it infuses with the chakra stored and creates a burst of sound in the air, the sound deflects the kunai outwards in random directions and dissipates before it blows your mind.

Underneath the blindfold I close my eyes and channel chakra to my ears, allowing me to enhance my abilities in that area of my body. As I breath I release a steady shot of sound chakra into the air, using a sonar pulse which bounces off of objects I am able to sense my surroundings and pinpoint the locations of obstacles and objects in my way. Listening carefully to the shapes of the objects around me I study their size and density in order to make a photo in my mind. With the surroundings mapped out I concentrate on finding your figure among the trees and rocks. Raising my hand I point at you and smile, awaiting recognition of my success.
I cannot sense anything that is blocked by any other solid object, and I also would not be able to sense anything that has no physical presence in the area such as lightning or fire.

Taking the same set up as before I begin to channel sound chakra throughout my body, instead of focusing the chakra in a point and creating a sound internally like I had with the scream I collect my chakra within my hands. Then, by bringing my hands together at pace I produce a clap, at the point of contact I release the sound chakra into the externally created noise. As the clap fuses with the chakra it creates a sound wave which shoots from my hands and is capable of dispersing any oncoming waves.
