The Son of Erebor
The Son under the Lonely Mountain
Far over the cold and mighty peaks of the Misty Mountains, through the dense and dark forest to the east filled with swamps and a vast marshland and walking through the barren wasteland with no shelter and no water, the sun shining down upon you burning your’ skin and the rain falling heavily on your’ shoulders when walking through the valley of Dale, you will find a beautiful and peaceful city, where the humans live together with their families. The fathers going to work every day, while the mothers and grandmothers stay at home cooking and waiting for their beloved husband to return home, and the children are playing on the streets. Beyond this city lies a single solitary peak, the Lonely Mountain. In the darkest night through the clouds, the full moon shines down upon the Lonely Mountain, the light filtering through the giant rocks while the wind is picking up small rocks sending them rolling across the ground, while the moon lights up a path towards an enormous and mighty gate of pure rock, carved out of the mountain itself.
This gate is the entrance to the mighty kingdom of the dwarf lord, Durin, the Fortress of Erebor, the homeland of the dwarves. When you see Erebor for the first time, you will be stunned by the two enormous statues standing on each side of the gate, towering above the ground guarding the gate. The gate itself is carved into the mountain and is so thick that it is said that not even the mightiest army could penetrate the gate and enter the mountain. But the most amazing sight lies inside the mountain, great halls filled with treasures held up by giant pillars holding the mountain together, pathways running through the mountain and large chambers filled with the most magnificent treasure you could ever imagine. The mightiest and most magnificent sight, the kingdom of the dwarfs, the dwarves had built their fortress for centuries and the entire fortress was carved through the mountain and deep into the earth, where they gathered gold, diamonds and mithril. Deep within this mountain, the King of Erebor sat on his magnificent throne carved into the mountain, where gold lies around him and the heart of the mountain, the most beautiful and most valuable possession of the Kings own belongings, is carved into the mountainside behind the throne. This heart shines bright throughout the halls of Erebor giving light and prosperity through their kingdom, the key to a secret pathway only known by the king is locked into the mountainside, surrounded by several guards with thick armor and large two headed axes watching it like hawks.
Deep inside this solitary peak, within the kingdom of Erebor, a son was born. The son of Firi, the sons name is Thrain. Thrain grew up together with his family while helping his mother at home cooking and cleaning the cave, he went out on guard duty with his father Firi, who taught him how to fight with axes and hammers. Firi saw great potential in his son; he taught him how to become a skilled smith in the dwarf kingdom. Thrain loved his father more than you could ever imagine and he worked hard to get his approval. One day when Thrain was a teenager, he was just returning home from his mining duties, where he had been working for a long time and needed a rest.
Thrain: “Hello mother…”
Mother: “Thrain my son, come here and give your mother a hug”
Thrain: “Mom I can’t stay home, I need to visit Farin”
Mother: “You can go when you have done your work here, clean the cave please, then you can go and visit your friend”
Thrain: “Mom!!! Dad said I could go”
Mother: “You will do as I say and clean this cave, or you won’t go anywhere”
Thrain: “Mom… alright, I’ll clean the cave…”
While Thrain was cleaning the cave for dirty spider webs with a little broom, swiping the floor for loose rocks and cleaning the kitchen from lunch, his mother went out to run some errands for dinner. When Thrain was cleaning his father and mothers room, he stumbled upon a large iron chest, it wasn’t locked and Thrain was so tempted that he slowly sat down on his small knees and took a hold of the chest with his shaky hands and slowly opened it to see what was inside. But right before he got to see what was inside his father’s chest, he returned home from his guard duty and walked into his bedroom with his full armor on and his axe hanging on his back, he came into the room just before Thrain could open the chest.
Firi: “What are you doing with my chest?”
Thrain: “Dad! umh… nothing”
He quickly closed the iron chest and put it down on the floor where he found it and stood up looking at his father standing there in his mithril armor and his two headed axes on his back, while holding his helmet in his left hand, he walked up to his son, while you could hear the axe swinging from side to side hitting his armor giving a powerful metal sound throughout the room.
Firi: “Don’t ever look into my things again, do you understand?”
Thrain: “Yes dad… sorry”
Firi: “Now go visit your friend before your mother comes home”
Thrain: “But I thought…”
Firi: “Now go, before I change my mind!”
Thrain didn’t hesitate to go, and ran out the room while his father closed the door behind him, he ran into his own little room and picked up a cape, leather armor, a small axe and a pouch filled with some gold which he could spend on anything he wished for. Then he ran out through the door and met his mother, whom was returning from her errands, as Thrain was on the way out to his friend Farin.
Mother: “Where are you going?”
Thrain: “I’m going to my friend Farins house…”
Before his mother could stop him for doing anything, he was already running down the halls of the great fortress of Erebor, he waved back at his mother as he ran around a corner and walked down the hallway filled with small workshops, smiths, markets and a waterfall of melted gold running down the sides of the walls. He was so amazed by this hallway that he forgot where he was walking, that he stepped on a wooden box and the box was filled with fish from the river outside the fortress, it was stuck to his foot as the tumbled forward and tried to navigate through the market without falling, but without luck, he hit a small rock which immediately send him into a dangerous fall over a table into one of the small markets and landed flat on his chest right in front of the owner, getting a nosebleed and hurting his ribcage.
Owner: “Hey watch where you’re going kid…”
Thrain: “Sorry… I was just so amazed by the great market…”
Owner: “Well go and be amazed somewhere else”
Thrain: “Alright alright…”
Thrain quickly got up on his feet and got the box off his feet, before he walked out of the market and continued down the hallway until he reached a blacksmith standing in front of him slamming his hammer continuously onto a piece of metal while the oven expelled an enormous amount of heat, making the master dwarf sweat like a pig, the sweat dripping off his red forehead and the iron turning red in the heat, before he put the piece of metal into the water where steam immediately rose from the water. When the blacksmith picked the now cooled and rock hard metal up again, it was formed into a small blade of thick and strong metal and just as he was about to continue his work, he noticed Thrain standing in the opening.
Bofur: “Ah Thrain, there you are, Farin is waiting for you inside…”
Thrain: “Thanks Bofur, say hello to everyone for me”
Bofur: “I will and remember to say hi to your father from me”
Thrain: “I will, see you later Bofur”
Bofur: “See you later lad”
Thrain greeted the blacksmith and walked inside, first through the living room where he met Farins mother preparing the dinner, he said hello to his mother and continued through their dining room into Farins bedroom. Farin was lying on his bed reading the runes engraved in the mountains roof right above his head, lit up by the small fire in the corner, shining onto the engraved runes with crystals in the lines, shining bright into the room.
Thrain: “Hey Farin!”
Farin: “Oh hey Thrain, what took you so long?”
Thrain: “Nothing, just broke a wooden box in a market”
Farin: “Haha! That’s funny”
Thrain: “Give me a break, what was it you wanted to talk to me about?”
Farin: “Oh yea about that, I actually wanted to ask you, if you wanted to go hunting with me after dinner.”
Thrain: “Sure why not, I already have my tools packed”
Farin: “Great then it shouldn’t be a problem”
Thrain: “What are we hunting tonight?”
Farin: “Oh we are just going out hunting for some wolves, it shouldn’t be that difficult”
Thrain: “Well it won’t be, unless we are disturbed”
Farin: “Haha… no one has ever come close to the woods around our borders… the goblins are too afraid of us”
Thrain: “Well we will see how it goes tonight; let’s go have some dinner first”
Farin: “Sure my mom has already made the dinner for us”
Thrain and Farin left the room quietly and walked into the dining room where the dinner had just been served, there
tons of meat from several animals including an ox, sheep and a pig. The whole table was filled with food, there was no room for even the smallest plate and there was a large barrel with rum standing next to the table just waiting to be emptied by the dwarves. Thrain and Farin quickly sat down and began eating and drinking everything they could, the juicy meat filled with flavors and the juice dripping down from their cheeks as they let their teeth bite into the tasty meat, and afterwards they took up two large glasses filled with rum, and immediately used it to get the rest of the meat stuck between their teeth and throat down into their stomach before leaving the table.
Farin: “Thanks for the dinner mom, it was delicious”
Mother: “You’re welcome boys…”
Thrain: “Well thanks, shouldn’t we get going Farin?”
Farin: “Yes we should, mom we are going hunting…”
Mother: “Alright boys, but be safe, you know I don’t like when you go out in the dark”
Farin: “We will be fine mom, don’t worry”
Both Farin and Thrain walked to the door, picking up their backpacks together with their own axes and bows and put on their small capes covering their heads before walking out the front door towards the gate. When walking through the great halls of Erebor towards the massive gate, the halls were lit by small torches hanging on the sides of the mountain walls, their shadows were long and their steps were quiet as they approached the gate where they met the guard, Bifur, whom was standing near the gate looking out through a small hole in the mountain being able to see into the distance to the city of Dale.
Farin: “Hey Bifur, how are you?”
Bifur: “Oh hey Farin, I’m good, I see you’re going outside?”
Thrain: “Yes, we are going hunting tonight, and we will be back within a few hours…”
Farin: “Oh common, we might stay out all night, hehe”
Bifur: “Well be careful out there, the people of Dale informed us that they have encountered goblins near their
borders…”
Thrain: “That’s unusual…”
Bifur: “Indeed the….”
Farin: “Hey relax, we are near Erebor, the mightiest dwarf kingdom, and they won’t even dare coming close to our fortress…”
Bifur: “We’ll see about that, be careful out there”
Thrain: “We will be fine, good night”
Bifur stood watch, as Thrain and Farin walked out through a small door in the giant gate, invisible by magic to any intruders, where they began walking down the dark and dusty road lit by the moon shining through the clouds leading their way towards the forest. As they were halfway towards the city of Dale not far from the fortress of Erebor, both Farin and Thrain stepped away from the road and walked into the forest, walking through the darkness together, avoiding giant rocks, bushes and listening to the sound of an owl in the distance.
Farin (whispering): “It’s so quiet out here… stay sharp, and listen for any movement….”
Thrain (whispering): “I am listening, there is not even a sound out there….”
Farin (whispering): “Relax everything will be just fine out here…”
Thrain (whispering): “shhh… quiet can you hear that?”
Farin (whispering): “hear what?”
Thrain (whispering): “Exactly… there is no sound at all… not even the owl…”
Farin (whispering): “Strange, there should at least have been a sound from the strike…”
Thrain (whispering): “There are not many creatures in this world that can kill in silence without being noticed…”
Farin (whispering): “Indeed… but that means…”
Thrain (whispering): “Exactly… goblins… and they know we are here”
The two dwarves quickly and quietly moved into a small opening in the forest where they were surrounded by several small rotten wood branches lying in a circle around them, they quickly pulled some branches into the center of the ring and started a small campfire giving them light, making them able to see around in the forest near them, being extremely cautious. While watching around into the forest like hawks, Farin pulled out his giant two headed axe and Thrain pulled out two axes holding one in each hand.
Thrain: “We can’t stay here… we have to get back home…”
Farin: “We should stay here until the sun rises…”
Thrain: “We will be dead before sunrise…”
Farin: “If you say so… but how do we get out of here, when we don’t know where they are?”
Thrain: “We need to wait here until the goblins find us….”
Farin: “Are you insane, if they find us we are dead…”
Thrain: “Our only chance for survival is if we get out of here… if the goblins find us, they will all be here fighting us… if they are all here, there won’t be any goblins on the way home…”
Farin: “I see, but how do you expect us to get out of here when they find us?”
Thrain: “Well that is something I’m not sure of yet…”
Farin: “Wait… look!”
Farin looked into the forest and so did Thrain in the same direction as several small green eyes was beginning to appear in the dark between the trees in the forest, while the fog is slowly coming down from the sky covering the entire forest in a thick fog making nothing visible. The goblins slowly moved around the two young dwarves in the center and moved slowly into the circle unnoticed as they can smell the two dwarves.
Thrain: “Be careful, I can’t see anything…”
Farin: “Let’s stand back to back, they can’t surprise us…”
Thrain: “Alright, the goblins know exactly where we stand…”
Farin: “Relax they won’t sneak up on me”
Thrain: “Goblins are sneakier than you think…”
As the two dwarves stood there in the thick fog, in the complete silence of the night, the moonlight shining down through the fog, making the fog seem like a thick wall of light, impossible to see through. Suddenly Farin yelled out and threw his giant hammer towards a shadow in the wall of light in front of himself and ran towards it and Thrain quickly followed.
Thrain: “What are you doing!”
As he came to Farins position inside the thick fog, Farin stood there with a dark and scared face as he looked at where his axe had struck. His axe had carved straight into a large piece of wood tied together to a tree extending it into the fog, where Farin tried his best to pull the axe out but with no luck.
Farin: “They are that sm… smart…”
Thrain: “I told you… take my axe…”
Farin: “Thanks…”
Before the two dwarves could react several goblins screamed out behind them and ran towards them, jumping over several branches throwing knives and sending arrows raining down upon their location, the arrows and knives cut through the fog like cheese and flew straight by the dwarves before the goblins became visible just a meter in front of them.
Thrain: “ARGH!!!”
Thrain without hesitation jumped forward, sending his axe cleaving straight through the goblins head, while kicking it away, he quickly turned around throwing his axe straight beside Farins head cleaving through the wind and cutting Farins hair off before striking a goblin just before it attack him.
Thrain: “Run!!!”
Farin: “I’m already running!”
Before Thrain could turn around to see Farin, he was already somewhere else in the forest running home. Thrain quickly jumped over several branches throwing his axe straight into a goblin in front of him before gaining in on Farin. Together they ran through the forest on their small legs crushing every branch beneath their feet and pushing everything aside as they ran through the forest getting several cuts on their arms, legs and head, not caring if they got hurt in anyway, trying to survive the assault from the goblins. They were both extremely scared as they could hear the goblins gaining on them and breaking the branches behind them, both dwarves screaming into the night as they breached out of the forest running down the road seeing Erebors magnificent gate in the distance.
