Chapter 3
She opened her eyes to see who defended her. The black orb of energy was gone, and the wolf demon was in front of her. Why did he come back if he was being chased?
“Run away before you get killed! I'm evenly matched with him, but you would get in the way!” he exclaimed.
“I can't leave Riha and Yuki! They can't walk yet!” she said loudly. She wouldn't abandon them after they tried to protect her. It would have been wrong to leave them.
“You're really going to stay for them? Even though your life is in danger?” he asked.
“Of course! They're my only friends! I can't abandon them!” she cried.
He sighed. “You can't stay here when you can't defend yourself.”
“She can defend herself now. We can't protect her like this anymore,” she heard quietly.
Who else was there? She looked around to locate the voice, but nobody else was there. 'Who said that?'
“Why did this day have to come? It was fun, but I wanted to have more time with her,” a different voice said.
“Come out and show yourself! I don't want any distractions!” the wolf demon shouted.
“Distractions or not, you're still going to die!” the other demon exclaimed. Another black orb started to form in his hand. Where did his energy come from? She thought it was impossible for energy to condense in one place.
The ball of energy was released from the demon's hand, and it went toward them in a twister-like way. It looked way stronger than the other one, and the wolf demon was too distracted by the voices to move! What was she going to do? Was it going to end that way? Was she really going to die, after Riha and Yuki tried protecting her?
“Ayame!” the wolf demon shouted suddenly.
'Huh? How does he know my name?' she asked herself. She doesn't remember telling him her name. She felt something weird after he shouted her name. She felt comfort, and all the doubts in her mind disappeared. Why was he having such an affect on her? She didn't even know his name, let alone why he wanted to protect humans.
When the twister was about to reach them a pink and blue sword appeared in front of them, and the twister was diverted to the side. “What happened!?” she heard the evil demon ask.
She looked around to see if Riha and Yuki were okay, but they were gone. “Riha? Yuki? Where did you go? Riha! Yuki! Don't tell me you died. You can't die. I- I'll be alone without you two!” She felt the tears roll down her face when the realization hit her. Even though they were alive just a few minutes ago, they were too injured. Their injuries killed them. That demon killed them. “You killed them. I will kill you myself to get revenge!” She ran over and grabbed the sword, and then a light burst out of the sword.
“Don't be reckless, Ayame! You can't stand against a demon!” the wolf demon called out.
“I can stand against him! What gives me power is my relationship with my friends! With Riha and Yuki! I can take him down with this sword!” she exclaimed.
“A human can take me down? Don't make me laugh,” he said confidently as he grabbed his sword and held it toward her. “I'm the strongest demon in the world. Not even slayers can take me down. If you want to lose your life so badly then come at me!”
“Don't do it, Ayame! Riha and Yuki wanted you to live! Are you really going to waste what they did for you!?” the wolf demon exclaimed.
She ignored the wolf demon and charged at the evil demon. She would not die. She would avenge her friends! She felt the power of the sword, and the sword wanted her to fight. She would obey the sword, and not run away! She ran away from the village, but she couldn't run away anymore! She had to learn how to live without running. She had to learn to stand up for herself! She wouldn't allow demons to have their way any longer!! 'I will become a slayer. I will kill any evil demon I encounter!'
She felt the impact as the two swords collided together. She was slightly able to feel the power from the demon's sword, and it was no ordinary sword. There had to be a source somewhere around the area to his magic power!! But where could it be located at?
“You underestimate me, girl. You will regret your actions!” the demon shouted as his sword glowed black and sent a wave of darkness at her.
“Ayame!!!” she heard the wolf demon shout.
She felt the pain, but she would not give up. The wave was meant to get her to stop, or to kill her. She would not die against that demon! If she died against that demon then she could never show her face to Riha and Yuki ever again!! She used the rest of her strength to push her sword against his sword even more. “I won't lose!! You're underestimating me! This is for my friends!!”
As soon as the words left her mouth the sword started to glow white, and it was so bright that she had to close her eyes. Then she felt something push her on the ground, and she had a feeling that she wasn't in front of the demon, but further away. The only thing she heard was ringing in her ears. What just happened?
She opened her eyes, and when the light disappeared she noticed that the demon's sword was out of his hand, and he was glaring at her. She saw his lips move, but she couldn't hear anything. Then she saw it. There was blood dripping from his arm. She didn't feel the sword hit anything, so how did he get that injury?
She then saw the wolf demon charge at the demon at very intense speed, but by time he reached him the demon, and his sword, was glowing black and they disappeared. He got away. She wasn't able to avenge Riha and Yuki.
The ringing in her ears finally stopped, and the wolf demon walked over to her and petted her head. “You did good today, Ayame. I was shocked.”
“Not good enough. I wasn't able to avenge Riha and Yuki,” she said quietly.
He was only staring at her, and then he smiled. “Come with me, Ayame. Come with me to look for Fukashigi.”
“Huh? Didn't you say that it was-” she started.
“Yeah. It is dangerous. I saw you use that sword though. With that you should at least be able to defend yourself,” he interrupted. “And, you'll have a chance to fight that guy again if you come with me.”
A chance to avenge Riha and Yuki. That's all she had to hear. She could become a slayer during their journey, and slay that demon. “Shouldn't I at least know the name of the demon I'm traveling with?”
“Kou. My name is Kou,” he said softly. She definitely felt comfort from his voice, even though they just met. Who was Kou, and why did he affect her so? Her heart wouldn't stop pounding. It wasn't love; she would never love a demon.
