Hello,
As the title suggest we shall delve into the topic of where did kishimoto-san got the influence for the this feud.
As you all have seen, Hashirama Senju had summoned the wooden Buddha using Sage art: Mokuton: True Several Thousand arms. Madara on the other hand had achieved the Rinnegan evolution through mixing Senju DNA as well as attaining an Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Both these abilities have a connection in Buddhism. The Sage art mentioned above is influenced by the Senju Kannon Avalokiteśvara. He wanted to aid those in suffering from the Samsara Cycle (which the rinnegan is based off). As we all know Hashirama used sage art as his trump card against madara, which is symbolic of how Avalokiteśvara was given those thousand arms after his arms had crumbled away while aiding those in suffering from the Samsara Cycle.
