I am an education major and we talk about this stuff all the time in my classes- the things I would like to change are:
1. The No Child Left Behind Act
Because of this act teachers are more focused on testing scores then anything else. Which is wrong in my opinion. Not all students test well, some yes because they don't study, but there are also students that don't do well on tests because of the way they learn and think.
This act is meant to give schools money if there students score a certain number on there Standardize testing (as an average) through yearly progress testing. The schools all have to be, as an average, at the proficent level by school year 2013-2014. However, this year most schools in the US have failed at reaching this goal of reaching a proficient level at there yearly testing.
As you can see and imagine, this pushes teachers and schools to focus on testing scores, not if the child is actually learning the material and growing as an individual. This also makes teachers more focused on 'teaching' students what will be on the next test not reviewing what they should know from the previous years or other things that can be helpful in the real world setting.
So I believe that there should be testing in schools but they should not be as heavily weighted. Testing should only be used to see a childs progress, thus giving the educator an idea on what the student needs help on and what they are understanding. It should NOT be used as a means of revenue to schools.
2.
Homework
Homework should only be used to help a student better understand what it is that is being taught in the classroom, not as a means of busy work. But as many of you have expereniced you have recieved homework that may be a stretch when it comes to relating to what you are learning- or my favorite busy work- it is a dumb assignment like a word serach of your vocab words.
I also believe that "home"work should be "class"work. I don't see any difference in doing the work in class rather then at home. If the students are doing the work in class they are more likely to do it on there own, get help/ask questions if they don't understand, and in all actually do the work. If the work is brought home and the student doesn't understand the question who are they to ask? You can't tell me that your parents always had the right answer, they may have had an answer but not always the right one. Not to mention some parents do the work for there child, thus there was no point in having the work given to the child in the first place.
So in my opinion class work should be done in class more often then it is done at home.
3.
Recess/Physical education/Music Education
Recess cuts is a irrational idea. In the US there is a big Child Obesity problem and although having a 20min recess doesn't make a huge impact, it is an impact indeed. School is not only a time to learn math, english, science, skills but also social skills. Recess gives children the chance to freely interact with there fellow classmates and learn how to socialize and communicate to each other in a safe monitered enviorment. Not only does it offer social interaction but it also gets children moving, which can relieve stress, and also exstingush some of the energy they have after sitting in classroom for hours on end.
Physical Education also is in the same boat as Recess- it gets children moving and also teaches them about teamwork, communication, and also about different sports and games they may not have otherwise have known about.
The argument that students can get physical activity in when they are home is valid, but is false in most cases. Let me explain... Some students are not so lucky to live in a safe enviorment to be able to get home and play outside with there friends, physical education/recess can be the only time they have of being active. Also because of todays technology a lot of students, no matter where they live, go home and play video games/eat/watch tv instead of being active. Thus like the students who may not live in a safe enviorment, they stay inside/ don't get up and move.
Music Education- education in the arts is also very important. I'm sure you have all heard about how if a student is envolved in the arts program it has shown that they do better on testing etc. However I do not feel that students should be forced to be in Band or Chorus, I do feel they should have the option to do so. This gives students the oportunity to explore the gifts that they may have, and also find an activity that they enjoy.
For now that is all I have that I would want to change... I know its alot... haha sorry

on a side note I also realize that some of this cost money to do- but I believe there should be more of an effert to make these types of things happen instead of being concerned about our paychecks... we should be more concerned about our youth/future. Also sorry for some of the bad grammer.
