The Scarecrow and the Crow - Chapter 3
Encounters
“Dad, get up.”
Sakumo opened his eyes and was immediately surprised by his son’s masked face looming over him. Few could sneak up to him while he slept. Granted that he let his guard down a little while he slept, he must have been used to his son’s presence so much that he barely noticed him.
He suppressed a yawn, glanced at the grey sky through the bedside window and slumped his head back in the comfort of his soft feathery pillows. He was about to give a smart ass retort about waking people up early on your day off but-
“A shinobi must prepare before it is too late to.” Kakashi recited before raising an eyebrow.
Sakumo blinked himself awake at the phrase. “How did you…?” He could only sigh at the realization. His son has a habit of going through his things. Not so long ago, Kakashi got hold of a poisoned dart and tried to shoot him with it the instant he walked into the room. Still, that was nothing compared to the time when Kakashi found explosive tags and decorated the house with it. That was quite a mess.
This time, it looked like he found a copy of the Shinobi Rule Book.
“You should prepare breakfast. I’m hungry.” Kakashi said with the most deadpan of faces. His voice had a mixture of annoyance, snobbery and casualness. It made him feel like being bossed around but… not really. He used to be a shy and quiet kid but with his mother’s mask on, he became somewhat spunky.
Sakumo got up and found himself sitting at the breakfast table in the same minute. They just reheated last night’s leftovers – miso eggplant noodles. It was his son’s favourite so Sakumo wondered why Kakashi was just staring at his bowl.
“Nervous?” Sakumo smiled to him to somehow ease his anxieties. “I was too when I first went to the Academy. That building was the scariest place for me.”
“No, not really.” Kakashi shook his head. This time, he stared at his father instead of the food. “What will we do there anyway?”
“There’s an admission ceremony today so I thought we could take a peek.” Sakumo explained after chewing on some noodles. “The Third will be there so maybe we could ask for a scholarship.” Sakumo looked up and Kakashi saw the glint of determination in his father’s eyes. “The Konoha Jounin’s First Child Academy Discount isn’t so bad but it doesn’t hurt to try.” The determination in his eyes intensified. “All we need are good marks in the entrance exam. Don’t let me down Kakashi!”
“Exam?” Kakashi eyes glinted at the mention of the word. It was his first time hearing about this.
“Don’t worry son.” Sakumo didn’t know if it was anxiety he’s seeing in Kakashi’s face but he gave a little assurance nonetheless. “Just stay calm, be yourself and -”
“I don’t want to hear it, dad.” Kakashi cut him off with a shrug. “That’s cheating.”
Sakumo was startled by his son for the second time that day. Fairness was a principle that people learned in early childhood but Sakumo did not expect for Kakashi to have such a strong sense of righteousness for his young age.
It made the father proud so he said nothing more and gave his son an approving nod. “Go and eat your breakfast then. We’ll leave after you fin-”
“Thanks for the meal.” Kakashi cut him off again, put his hands together and curtly bowed.
His son has managed to eat his food without Sakumo noticing. That is, Sakumo didn’t even notice Kakashi lowered his mask.
Sakumo thought he really shouldn’t let his guard down with the little punk.

Kakashi tagged along his father, or rather walked in front of since he was ahead the level of the tall man. He was hurrying to get to their destination but they kept being side tracked because the villagers kept greeting them.
Kakashi knew his father was an important man for the village. Sakumo was frequently summoned in the middle of the night to report directly to the Hokage. He gets the dangerous, secret missions that were only assigned to the most skilled shinobi of Konoha.
He knew he was important man but not to this extent. It was Kakashi’s first time seeing how famous Sakumo was. Everyone they crossed paths displayed fearful respect and expressed eternal gratefulness that Kakashi can’t help but be impressed at his father, and be proud that he is the son of famous “White Fang”.
They arrived at a huge building at the base of a mountain. It had the faces of three shinobi who, according to his father, were the strongest shinobi’s in Konoha during their time. The First founded the whole shinobi system and Konoha itself. The Second was the one who established the ANBU and the Academy that they were currently entering.
Kakashi looked up to the huge Fire symbol engraved in the arch at the entrance. They were walking towards the tallest building in the middle.
“This is where I get my missions from the Hokage.” Sakumo stopped to turn at him and explain.
“I know, dad.” Kakashi remembered reading about it in a map he found in Sakumo’s cabinet. Though the map was old, it was quite accurate. “That’s where the Hokage’s office is.”
Kakashi didn’t mind his father’s awkward smile. Sakumo scratched his head, apparently wondering how he was able to learn of this. Kakashi can’t blame him. Sakumo doesn’t know what Kakashi does when he leaves for a mission. Sakumo’s missions normally take a day or two. The longest that he was gone was for a week and that was when Kakashi’s boredom consumed him. Since he was forbidden to go outside, Kakashi spent his time in Sakumo’s study where there were many things – mostly shinobi tools and weapons – to amuse him
They walked a few staircases and corridors to get to their destination – the Hokage’s office.
A handsome, blonde haired teen was just exiting the office when they arrived. “Good morning, Hatake-san.” The blonde greeted and smiled warmly. “How fortunate that we meet during your summons.”
“It’s actually my day-off.” Sakumo scratched his head before chuckling to himself. “Nice seeing you here, Minato-kun.”
At the mention of the blonde’s name, Kakashi’s eyes sharpened. He knew that name. That name was always mentioned when they talk about Kakashi’s birth year – which was always a topic since he was a tall child and no one would believe his real age.
Kakashi was born in the year when the Second Shinobi War ended. Active Shinobi like Sakumo decided to have family on that year because it was the time of peace. This time of peace could not have been achieved if a certain Minato Namikaze hadn’t saved a kidnapped girl from Kumogakure.
Kakashi couldn’t believe that this Minato was so young. He looked only about fifteen or sixteen years of age. Kakashi suppressed the urge to flinch when Minato suddenly appeared in front of him, leaning forward to smile at him at his eye level.
“How are you, Kakashi-kun?” Minato greeted him. Kakashi was surprised that the blonde knew his name so he couldn’t respond quickly. Minato laughed, seemingly finding his blank expression endearing. “Are you here for the admission ceremony?” Minato’s reflex was so fast that Kakashi didn’t even notice when the blonde extended his hand. Kakashi only noticed when Minato gave his shoulder a friendly squeeze. “Have fun.”
Kakashi suppressed the urge to flinch. In that momentary physical contact, Kakashi could feel a hidden power coursing through the gentle hand. At that second, Kakashi decided to keep an eye on the teen.
“No.” Kakashi answered with a poker face. “We’re here to ask the Hokage for a discount. I’m taking the next entrance exam.”
“Kakashi!” Sakumo blurted out, outraged by the fact that his son shared something inappropriate. They weren’t actually dirt poor but to say it so bluntly… How embarrassing.
“What?” Kakashi looked up to Sakumo, the indifference still plastered in his face. His father could be so sensitive and emotional sometimes. Kakashi knew of his father’s reputation as a cold blooded killer but he can’t just ignore the fact that his dad is an idiosyncratic dork. “That’s what you said during breakfast.”
His answer rendered Sakumo speechless. Minato’s smile had become crooked.
“The entrance exams huh?” Minato broke the silence. He nodded in understanding; he seemed to reminisce about his own. “It’s fun; a healthy four year old would certainly enjoy it, besides…” Kakashi didn’t show it but he was surprised when Minato leaned forward again. “Love for the village is all you need to pass.”
The blonde teen smiled to him before turning towards his father. “It’s nice seeing you, Hatake-san. I will tell Jiraiya-sensei that you said hi.”
Sakumo snapped from his daze and gave Minato a wave of the hand in goodbye. Kakashi watched as the blonde bowed before leaving.
Finally, Kakashi thought, someone got his age right.
