The Saudi woman who wants a divorce - because her husband tried to sneak one look at her face after 30 years of marriage

After 30 years of marriage, cynics might say most husbands and wives would have seen quite enough of each other, thank you very much.
But not in the case of one Saudi Arabian man who managed to live with his wife for three decades without setting eyes on her face.

Not that he had much choice about it. His 50-year-old wife followed the tradition of her native village near the south-western city of Khamis Mushayt and kept her features veiled at all times.

Until one night last month, that is, when the husband was finally overcome by curiosity and tried to lift his wife's veil as she slept to take a look at her face.

Scroll down for more ...

Tradition: In the village in South West Saudia Arabia, women keep their features veiled at all times (file picture)
It was an error he is unlikely to be given a chance to repeat for his outraged wife woke up during his sneak peek and is now demanding a divorce.

'After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake,' she told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh after leaving the house in disbelief.

She said her husband apologised and promised never to do it again, but she insisted she wanted a divorce. It is not the first example of Saudi husbands with wives forever shrouded in mystery.

There was the case of Ali al-Qahtani whose wife had been wearing a face veil for the entire ten years of their marriage. When he tried to take it off she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again.

And neither the husband or children of Om Rabea al-Gahdaray, 70, have ever seen her face. It was a family tradition, also followed by her mother and sisters, which her husband accepted and never tried to change, she said. When asked how she could have children without her husband ever seeing her face, she replied: "Marriage is about love, not faces."

Many Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran require women to cover their faces in public but in the privacy of their homes there is no such compulsion.

But always remaining veiled - even in front of your husband - is not an Islamic practice, but a very old tradition practised by a tiny minority of women in remote areas of Gulf countries.

Most examples of it are in Saudi, one of the most conservative of countries.

That seems like a ridiculous reason to get divorced to those who don't understand their customs or understand their way of life, but it is a very good reason to do that kind of thing.

He had no opinion to post, because he didn't read it. As Ldude said, read it or don't post.

OT: It's their culture. xd Seems extreme though.

"marriage is about love, not faces" I think that is true but not seeing your wife's/children's face, I don't get it(their culture). :/

Pretty extreme. O_O
I don't know how the man could stay with her for 10 years without seeing her face.

Wow... I, honestly, don't know how the guy lasted 30 years. I'd be lucky to last 30 minutes. That relationship would not go well at all, because I would be honor-bound to my curiosity to find out what she looked like. I'd be pretty relentless about it, too.

"I can't believe you'd look at my face after being with me for 2 weeks..."

"Surprise! Here's a picture of your face that I took just hours after we first met."

"...."

"Hey, I showed you my face. It was only fair you show me yours. You didn't play this game in kindergarten and get horribly confused about why guys had .... uh... belly buttons... that poked out?"

Yeah... what works for them is cool and all... but I'd be a goner in that culture.

I think they have the right idea. We should all wear bags on our faces to battle superficialism U_U

Only minority of Saudians practice this nowadays. Those on rural and province areas perhaps. I spent 3 years in the middle east, Qatar to be exact, to get a feel of their culture.

What I learned their is that you will become an instant millionaire if you have a daughter. I don't know what it is called exactly but you need to give money to the bride's family in exchange of marriage.

Now if that's the case, it would only be fair to see your Wife's face!!!! All my penny's worth that is!!!

What do you think?

Note: They don't know Naruto, all animation will be called Tom & Jerry........*sigh*

That's certainly a werid religion/culture thing to me, since I take no part in it and am around people whose faces I see daily. In America and in most of the world, seeing a face is a regular occurence. So, to me, it's a stupid thing, but if she's seriously thinking of divorce of it, she's one dedicated oerson if it's for religion/culture purposes. If it's for money, it's bad. Still, I feel bad for the guy. He just wanted to see the face of the one he loved and now a divorse may be happening. I think it speaks alot on her part, when/if she can't put her love infront of her religion/culture. That's pluses in the religion/culture department, but negatives in the love department.

Well, that's all I have to offer on this.

This is extremely interesting. I liked the whole part about how a relationship/marriage is about love, not the face. Thank you for sharing this. :)
