*Note* I do not actually believe any of the following, but it seems slightly viable and pretty cool.
What if, (now hear me out here) the legendary Sannin were originally a part of an Ino-Shika-Cho trio?
Let's look at the facts:
1. It's been stated by Asuma that the Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi clans have a special bond. Traditionally, 3-man teams are formed from these 3 clans from early days in the academy, always led by a Sarutobi sensei.
2. It has also been shown in the manga/anime that there are members of those clans whose names don't start with Ino-, Shika-, or Cho-, so that's not a necessity.
3. Hiruzen (a Sarutobi) was the sensei of the the 3 Sannin.
4. The Yamanaka clan is physically characterized by its light-haired individuals who tend to wear their hair in a long ponytail.
5. The Akamichi clan is physically characterized by its husky individuals with long, spiky hair of various color and symmetrical markings on both cheeks.
6. The Nara clan is physically characterized by its genius-level shinobi, pale skin, and black hair.
Now you must be asking in your head, "WHY DON'T THEY USE CLAN TECHS THEN?! HUH?!" Well that's where this part can only become more theorized but here's my interpretation.
Lemme break it down for you:
Hashirama's wife eventually gives birth to a child, who eventually has Tsunade, this much is true. Here, I believe that Tsunade's father/mother married a Yamanaka. Since Konoha was already founded, this would not be uncommon. The result would be Tsunade having traits of the Yamanaka clan and the Senju, the former of which would put her in in line to be a part of the next Ino-Shika-Cho team. Tsunade however, would have instead chosen to follow the path of her much more powerful Senju ancestry and learn the art of medical ninjutsu instead, thus refusing to learn any mind transfer techniques.
Jiraiya, being an Akimichi, would be put on Hiruzen's team as well. Jiraiya would also refuse to learn his clan's techniques for an entirely different reason. Being a giant pervert, Jiraiya's only reason for wanting to be a ninja in the first place is to impress women. That being said, one does not attract girls when their jutsu involves becoming fat. Thus, Jiraiya would have no part of the Akimichi's calorie control, opting instead to learn his own techniques to impress the ladies.
Finally comes Orochimaru. It can be assumed that the Nara clan, having heard that the other members of Orochimaru's team refused to learn their respective clan's techniques, denied Orochimaru the shadow imitation jutsus. There would be no point in restraining an opponent without other members of the trio using their distinctive jutsus. Angered by this, Orochimaru may have severed ties with his clan (symbolically letting his hair down from the Nara clan's unique ponytail style) and sought to learn every jutsu in the world as a form of vengeance.
Thoughts?

Here we have a picture of a young Ino and a young Tsunade. Notice the similarities?

Here we have a picture comparing Jiraiya's cheek marks with that of Choza's. Also recall the usage of spiky hair techniques used by both Jiraiya and Choji.

Here's one last image comparing Shikamaru and an Orochimaru of a similar age. Note the similar head shape and hair color. Also imagine if you will a Shikamaru with his hair down and much longer.
