I've seen people state that Rin throwing herself in front of Kakashi's Chidori was not necessary as Konoha would have dealt with it easily. But people aren't taking into consideration what was happening at the time. The reason Konoha was able to do so well in handling the Kyuubi was because the third great ninja war was over, meaning that everybody was back in Konoha. But when the Mist were pursuing Rin, the third ninja war was still going on. This means that people like Minato, Ino-Shika-Cho etc, would all be out on missions. Hiruzen would not have been enough to stop a whole tailed beast, leaving the Uchiha who would likely be in a meeting or the Hyuga. The Sanbi could have easily caused equal or more damage than the Kyuubi did, that's why Rin thought is was neccesary to jump in and sacrifice herself.
