So, what if the the Sage planned to do the exact same thing as Madara when he created the moon.

-> He succeded in creating it and applying the genjutsu but silly him he did not realize how strong he is and he casted it on himself too.
-> So... this means that he never died, and since he is in this illusion as the rest. How can they get out of it?
