It just feels to me that he came to his conclusion too quickly.

Didn't the sage say that he watched over Narutos shoulder since he was born? IF yes it's plausible that he trusts him

Seems to me that you didn't read the few last chapters... When Hagoromo introduced himself he says that he's been watching over Naruto and everything he has done, so it wasn't that quickly.!
