The thing is, there are many fellas out there overthinking it and sometimes they come up with the most ridiculous theories ever (Won't judge, is good to overthink things sometimes) for the six paths, Such as uzumaki/ hyuga/ rinnegan/ sharingan/ senju and blah blah blah etc.

-The sage of six paths had rinnegan.
-He was known as "The 'Sage of six paths".
-Nagato, altough not as powerful(He said it) as the sage he had the powers of him, adquired via rinnegan, the six powers granted by rinnegan. Those are the six paths of the sage and the reason he was known as the sage of six paths. The answer for the "six paths" is already there and is quite simple when you think about it.
- Deva Path.
- Asura Path.
- Human Path.
- Animal Path.
- Preta Path.
- Naraka Path.
Do not mix "The six paths of pain", they were the six paths placed into six bodies wich nagato would call the six paths of pain because he wanted everyone to understand his pain, it has nothing to do with the six paths being the six paths of the sage.
