Alright, as seen by the last few chapters, young Obito is a good, kind-hearted person who just wants to spend time with Rin and Kakashi. In his present life, he's filled with hatred, trying to change the world by using a genjustsu over the world. Also, a certain hatred for Kakashi most likely.
By my theory, while stuck with Old Madara, Obito thought that he would one day escape and see them. When he met these two "androids" in the cave, they had this conversation about the "Eye of the Moon Plan." As seen here, the "android" with a normal face mentioned that while people are in the genjutsu or "dream," they can do anything they want.... even revive the dead.
With that in mind, Obito races to an alarming event that involved Kakashi and Rin in trouble at the end of the latest Naruto chapter. The spiral-faced "android" then fused with Obito, which I assume will have some sort of control over Obito's conscious mind. Madara might or might not have created the unfortunate event in which Rin dies. It doesn't if Madara did though because Obito witnessed the death of his closest friend anyways. From then on, Obito has a small hatred for Kakashi because he didn't keep the promise of keeping Rin safe when Obito got smashed by the rocks. Little by little, that hatred grew because Obito probably beat it up on himself. He probably have this idea of agreeing with Madara, perhaps even trying to revive Rin in a less demoralizing way than Edo Tensei, like Nagato's Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique which intended to revive Madara (even Madara seems to not like to be revived by Edo Tensei). Along with that, the spiral-faced "android" takes more and more control of Obito's mind, perhaps taking full control of his body and mind in the battle against the 4th Hokage. That might be the reason why Tobi didn't know the 4th Hokage and his capabilities.
Overall, this is just my idea. I can see flaws with it, such as when does Obito have control of himself and when does the "android" have control of it. It seems like Obito was once good and knowing Kishi, if someone evil in the Narutoverse has some good inside of him/herself, he/she will do something "shocking" and help the good guys. Maybe Obito might help defeat Madara after some sort of realization that what he has done is not the path he wanted to go on when he was a kid
