According to kojiki and nihongi, two
Kami, the brother and sister izanagi and
Izanagi, created the islands of japan. They
Stood upon the heavenly floating bridge (or
rainbow) and lowered the jewelled spear into
The primeval subtance below. When they re-
moved the spear, the brine dripped down off
the spears tip and formed an island. Izanagi, the "fe-
male who invites" descended to the land,
conjoined, and gave birth to the eight islands
of japan. They went on to create thirty spirits
of earth, sea, seasons, winds, mountains, trees,
moors and fire. But as her augustness, the
"female who invites" gave birth to fire, she
was scorched and grew very ill.
In her sickness she gave birth to the metal
mountain prince and princess, the viscid clay
Prince and princess, the spirit princess water,
And young wondrous producing spirit. Her
Augustness, the mother deity, then retired
from existence.
Izanagi was so stricken with grief over the
Loss of his sister that he wept and danced,
Thereby expressing his tremendous sorrow.
The strength of his emotions was such that
through his grieving he created the "weeping
spirit" his augustness then sliced off the
head of his son, the fire spirit, kazu-tsuchi.
From the blood of kazu-tsuchi that dripped
through izanagis fingers arose the dragon
Gods kora-okami, "dark water snake" from
The lifeless limbs of the fire spirit emerged
Many other spirits.
Izanagi wishing to reunite with izanami,
Descended into "land of the night" to find
Her. When he came upon the entrance to the
Underworld, he called for his sister. Izanami
Came but refused to be seen. He pleaded for
Her to come back with him, for they had not
Yet finished creating the world. But she could
not; she had eaten the fruit from yami,
The land of the dead. The fruit once inside
Izanami, anchored her to death forever. She
Could never leave the realm of the dead and
Thus izanami became known as the "spirit of
the night"
His augustness could not endure the loss,
So he broke a tooth off the comb in his hair,
Set it aflame, and began to search for izanami.
What izanagi found was the decaying body of
Izanami. Infront of his very eyes the eight
Thunder deities were born from izanamis rot-
Ting flesh. His augustness turned and fled
In horor.
Shamed by her brothers action, izanami
Sent three demon spirits in the form of hags
After izanagi. When he reached the "land of
The living" he threw three peaches(the devine
fruit) at the pursuing hags and they retreated.
Finally, izanami herself came after izanagi. He
Closed off the entrance to the underworld
With an enormous bolder, then stood facing
Her. Izanami swore that she would each day
Take to death a thousand countrymen;
Izanagi swore in return that he would cause
More to be born. In this fashion, mortality
Came to the world.
The union with izanagi and izanami created
The natural world; their separation caused
Death to come into the world. It is interesting
To note that the underworld in shinto
Mythology is not a place of punishment, but
Rather decay and uncleanliness. Indeed, after his experience
In the land of the dead,
Izanagi felt the need to purify himself and im-
mersed himself in a river.
Water, so essential to the cycle of rice
Farming is a powerful symbol of purification
And revitalization in shinto belief.
