Everyone of us asked himself at least once who was the overall saddest in an universe in which almost everybody is a depressed sociopath murderer: was it Itachi? And what about Nagato? and what if it was Obito? Or rather Gaara?
Well, none of those. The king of sadness in NV was:

Well son, let me tell you a story... A sad story.
When Kakuzu was born, he was powerless. Just like Rock Lee. When kids noticed it, they heavily bullied him. Every day at school, they snatched his money for the lunch. This made Kakuzu incredibly sad
Once, his schoolmates organized him a party. They obviously had evil intentions, so they made him drink heavy and he got ultra wasted.
Then, they suggested to him to go kill the First Hokage, Hashirama.
Kakuzu took his Opel and jumped into the Waterfall-Konoha highway, causing about 400 fatal car accidents.
When he arrived, he obviously got his ass kicked. Meanwhile, he got accused of dangerous driving, and when he came back, he got arrested.
In jail, he started developing an obsessive-compulsive schizophrenia. One day, wondering what could it happen if he packed other four hearts into his chest, he murdered all of his guards.
Kakuzu then noticed he had become immortal and pretty strong, and swore that nobody would steal his money anymore. So he resolved to become a mercenary
His next 80 years were the most happy period of his life. But like every happy time, they were brief and fleeting.
Fascinating by the joy of living and the winning personality of a punk guy with orange hair, he joined an humanitarian organization called Akatsuki.
When he introduced himself to the other members, he was so proud of his immortality.
But Kisame took advantage of his innocence and naiveness and started to call him "zombie"
This brought the ghost of the past to Kakuzu. All the times he ran home crying when he was a child, all the times his friends cooked their food with Katon while he had to buy an electric burner.
He tried to suicide, but he was too immortal for that! Even his hearts threatened him by saying "if you suicide, we'll kill you!"
And Kakuzu felt so damn guilty! Getting bullied by his own hearts was worse than his worst nightmare!
Years after, the sadness took his peak. Hidan joined the Akatsuki. When he discovered that guy was more immortal than him, Kakuzu felt stabbed in his pride of immortal. He wanted to kill Hidan, but he was too immortal too!
