Hiruzen is the best elemental user. Kakashi can also use the 5 elements, but Kakashi is more specialized in Doton, Raiton and Suiton. His level in Katon and Futon aren't great. While Hiruzen masters perfectly the 5 elements. In this scene I posted, Hiruzen is able to use simultaneously 5 Rank A elementary jutsu. Because we can see that the Katon he is using here is probably Katon Karyuu Endan, a Rank A Ninjutsu.

So logically, the other elementary jutsu he is using are the same level than his Katon. Hiruzen can use Katon, Doton, Raiton, Suiton and Futon at the same high level, which is a great feat.
Now imagine Prime Hiruzen realizing powerful elementary combos. I think Hiruzen speciality as a Ninja was the fact he masters so well the 5 elements. You can understand why Hiruzen was called the God of Shinobi.
Hashirama earned this title because he was so powerful and great leader that he reminded the Rikudo Sennin. Hiruzen earned this title because back in the time, the Rikudo Sennin was the only person in the world able to use so well the 5 elements. Basically, mastering the 5 elements was considered as a Rikudo trait.
This is why when Jiraiya saw that Nagato had rinnegan + the ability to use the 5 elements, he immediately thought that he was the child of prophecy.

Hiruzen's ability to master at a so high level the 5 elements, reminds the Rikudo Sennin, this is why he earned this title.
And this why also the last Databook stated that Hiruzen at a young age, was more talentuous than Tobirama Senju.

More talentuous doesn't mean more powerful, but it means that when Hiruzen were around 20 years old, he showed more feats than Tobirama when he was the same age. These feats are the fact Young Hiruzen was more prodigious than Tobirama about using the 5 elements. Tobirama had the 5 Chakra nature, but he used only Suiton. To have the 5 chakra nature doesn't mean you use all of them, but that you have the potentiality to use all of them if you train yourself, but for some reason, Tobirama decided to specialize himself in Suiton, while Hiruzen decided to master all of them.
Hiruzen impressed Hashirama and Tobirama themselves. A so great genius at a young age, even more talentuous than Tobirama himself. This is why they decided to train him.
