The Question that just won't seem to go away

So my girlfriend and I who have been together for a year and a half went out to a formal fund raiser (which was great, got to see Damien Escobar perform) and she let's me know that her mother gave her cash thinking it was for both of us to take a cab home. The cab cost $40 (one of the perks of living in NYC) which was paid for completely with the money her mother left her.

The next day I find out her mother is pissed because that money was meant for only my girlfriend, meaning I was supposed to take the bus home (12 a.m., dressed up and etc.) alone. Then her mother goes off about how I should be paying for everything her daughter wants to do, even though 90% of the time I pay for everything.

My question is this: Should the man in a relationship ALWAYS have to foot the bill? Or should the bill be somehow split, whether 50/50 or 80/20?

P.S. - We're both 20 year old college students.

This is pretty much my own perspective on it. I always foot the bill but the second $40 bucks goes missing, the world flips over.

Not a rocket science , women only respond to powerfull men aka man with lots and lots of money , they should be able to at least be able to pay the bill , and now to your question NO the bill cannot be divided . You see if you are a very smart guy with no money you gonna be forever alone but on the other hand if you are just ok or even ugly but with hell lotta money its win win for you . Hahahah

Well it is DEFINITELY awkward that she paid for the entire cab fare. You should always offer first and be prepared to pay the whole bill though, and then split if she starts insisting.

I probably should've. But I was under the impression that her mother gave us cab fare for the both of us.

I can't deny that this is true, but realistically, a relationship should be about just the relationship imo. It's a shame worldly values have to find a way into everything.

The man should pay for the bill in the first date as a sign of appreciation that the girl went out with him. But since women want equality I think its only fair for them to pay half the time assuming they have the money. There's an old saying that might help you. It goes if a parent says something do the opposite and you shall love your life jk.
