With the revelations of the last chapter, I feel like Unohana has been slightly robbed of all the awe and wonder that was given to her throughout the series.
First off we had her statistics. With Aizen's defection, Unohana came in as the second strongest Shinigami in the Soul Society (having 540/600). This placed her 20 points behind Yamammoto (who had a 560) and 20 ahead of Shunsui (520).
Next, we finally find out that Unohana was the First Kenpachi. With this we could basically conclude that Unohana was basically Zaraki except she was an expert in swordsmanship, Kido, expirience, and finally she had a bankai. One could say she was the very thing we had always thought would be terrifying (Zaraki with a bankai). We also know she has a bankai because it was already stated that Zaraki was the only Captain without a bankai.
Then we find out that Unohana is going to train Zaraki. At first we believe she is going to train him in order to bring him to his full potential (though he'd still lack a bankai). This doesn't turn out to be the case as Shunsui says that instead, it is actually a fight to the death.
With Shunsui's statement we have basically been told Unohana will lose because 1. This origional "training" was for Zaraki, and 2. Zaraki has a closer tie to Ichigo (main character). It was here that I wondered, "How does Unohana die in this battle? She is basciallly a supped up Zaraki." That question was quickly answered.
Unohana would end up losing because she did some "sin" that made it so Zaraki got stronger everytime he was basically killed. This was a respectable answer, and one that I enjoyed. Not only was Zaraki going to get stronger, it provided a legitimate reason for Unohana to lose. I also began to figure Unohana's medical skills would end up saving her once she strengthened up Zaraki to finally pass her strength. This last chapter has then taken a bit of fun out of the "sin".
Here we have Unohana with skill in Kido, Kendo, expirience, and a bankai...and instead of all the interesting things like a bankai related ability, or a kido related technique, they decide that Zaraki was always stronger, and that Unohana only won because Zaraki played it easy.
So Unohana doesn't become the Captain Commander as the second strongest in the Soul Society, but it is given to Shunsui (though this I have no complaints as Shunsui has always had a sense of bringing up moral with people). With Yammamoto's death she loses her rank as Second Strongest when they decide to enter the Zero Division. And know she is saying no one other than Zaraki was stronger than her.
To summarize, Unohana was given this position as this quiet person who was stood as the second strongest, but with the death of number 1, Kubo introduces 6 people who replace her strength as number one, and then places her in a death match for her first fight.
Obviously this thread has a tone of resentment as, in all honesty, I am a Unohana fan (my favorite Captain since the Sould Society arc). While I am more than happy that Zaraki is getting a power boost (he is also on the favorites) I feel as though Kubo could have gone about it in a slightly better way. Instead of Zaraki being more powerful, I wish it had been made in some way that Unohana was in fact stronger, but did something through Kido or her Bankai that caused Zaraki to be seemingly incapable of being killed.
With the last page looking like Unohana just took a big hit, I am hoping it isn't the end of the fight. This fight has been epic even with my dissapointment in the "sin" of this latest chapter. All I can hope is that Kubo at least allows Unohana to actually use her bankai if he is seriously going to kill her off (which I'm hoping isn't about to happen :T_T
.
So with that I believe this is an accurate (thought slightly biased) view of Unohana's existence in Bleach! Feel free to comment on anything and everything, and have a nice day!
