Madara would have failed the second Obito walked out of that cave, had he not been BZ's secret *****.

He spend his whole life thinking he was playing both sides of the chess board, and in the end he couldn't even realize that he was never even playing, he was a pawn.

To be fair, I think part of the point of Madara's defeat was that his arrogance and power amounted to nothing. Like, the character was so arrogant and powerful, but all that really amounted to nothing. It was even discussed in his death scene. Ultimately, Madara's power was great, but it didn't amount to anything but someone else's plan in the end.

I actually think it was a good end for a character I ended up really liking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
