Kishi loves his paths and he loves to bluntly point them out to the reader. The main subject here is the "Six Paths" which Hagoromo spook of. When Pain was introduced, it was theorized that these paths are simply names for the Rinnegan's powers. But what if in reality, they mean something more than that? What if they are all paths to obtain peace in some way or another, a way to make the walker's dreams come true. This is were my theory starts off.

As we all know, the Rinnegan gives the user several abilities. They are all labelled with the word "Path" in their name, however there are a total of 7 paths for the Rinnegan. This is one thing that may hint towards that Hagoromo was not nicknamed "Rikudou Sennin" because of the Rinnegan. What if he was given that name, because of his beliefs and for his way of being? Hagoromo was a man who talked about peace for the entire world, he wished for that deeply and thus he must have had an idea of what it is. What if he was given the name based on the way he meant peace should be achieved? Let me explain.

So far in the manga, we've met a total of 6 people who wish for peace and change in the era of hatred, war and sadness. These 6 people are as follows:

  • Uchiha Madara
  • Uchiha Obito
  • Uchiha Sasuke
  • Uzumaki Naruto
  • Uzumaki Nagato
  • Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo

They all wish for peace and change in some form or another, and they are all connected through blood and they have all shown tremendous skill and ability. Now, here is another thing. Emotionally, they are driven by different things, and I think that this is what the "Six Paths" are. Hagoromo knew that peace cannot be created unless you understand one and each other, meaning that certain conditions has to be met in order for it to be peace. I can label the "Paths" of 4 characters here, the other two are those I am not entirely certain of yet. So here goes.

  • Obito - Despair
  • Sasuke - Hatred
  • Naruto - Loneliness
  • Nagato - Pain

The reason why I think that certain conditions has to met is simple. One cannot understand the importance of something before one understands the opposite of it and loses it. These characters all feel the way they do because they have lived through it, they know the importance of the opposite and fully understands that. Because of those feeling, the characters turned out how they did. Naruto trusts his friends and they mean so much to him because he knows how painful loneliness is. Sasuke loves his family, clan and brother more than anything because he knows the pain of losing them and the hatred that comes with it. The same goes for the other characters, though each character also goes under several paths. Sasuke knows hatred, despair, loneliness and pain. The same goes for Naruto. I think that Hagoromo lacked one of these paths, but believed that gaining all of them would make it possible to gain true peace. To make everyone understand these "Paths" is the true way to peace. I think that is why he was given the name, "Rikudou Sennin". The Six Paths to reach peace.

Hmmm I like where you're going with this. Maybe Rikudou Sennin knew that the peace he was trying to obtain was not possible with just himself but a collection of these "paths". Because of wars, Rikudou probably knew of and seen these emotions and knew one man couldn't fix it. Nothing has been done alone in the ninja world and there's no way one person alone is going to find peace for the whole ninja world. I'm not sure about the 7 paths but maybe this mystery man is that 7th "path" we are missing. Anyway, at least your theory is something knew and fresh and for that I'll rep. It's a lot better than the lame ass theories that pop up after every chapter.

First off, thank you. Unto the point however. I believe that Hagoromo lacked something that made it impossible for him to obtain peace, so he made it so that the conditions would be met at some point. I think that what he lacked, the very thing he didn't have was a counterpart. That is why he had two sons, that is why he made them opposite of each other, so that they could learn to understand each other and create peace with the world. That is why Sasuke and Naruto are the way they are, their friendship, bond and understanding of each other is what the Sage lacked.
