Well apparently you really actually get it from the trauma of your best friend dying, not killing them.

I can't remember whether Itachi or Tobi said it, but one of them said the Uchiha history was written in blood because the Uchihas always tried killing their best friends for the MS.

But how many people actually got the MS? Madara, Izuna, Shisui, Itachi, Kakashi, Sasuke in that order. (not counting Danzo whose MS was already unlocked by Shisui.)

That's true, but I could of sworn that he stated that all of his best friends were already dead by part 1

Yeah but I guess the trauma of that was what helped him unlock it. Sasuke didn't get MS until Tobi told Sasuke the truth about Itachi.

Itachi and Shisui were still best friends and it doesn't look like Itachi actually killed him at this point.

It cant be just obitos death alone that caused kakashi's ms to awaken. My guess is that beyond killing (or for kakashi, witnessing) your friends death - you have to accept the sacrifice.
