Key word, fascinatingly. I can't speak for Akainu because I barely know him, but Danzō's character is completely debatable. That is why he's fascinating. He's the only character that makes people think on such matters and levels.

Akainu, despite what he did, is awesome. There's just no denying it. Unless you are like me or HiddenSound, and have a tendency to like villains, you wont understand why he's awesome.

Kishi did an awesome job with Danzo. I don't think I've ever seen anyone blur the line between good and evil with one entity before, even more so than anti-heroes like Deadpool.

Indeed he did, and I haven't either...
I also think Danzō's comparatively short time in the manga was good. His lack of screen time made him extraordinarily enigmatic. And the fact that he never chatted with Naruto or Kakashi or any other protagonist for long, is good. If he did, it's possible he would have been TnJ'd, seeing how Kishi does things.

Honestly, Akainu is easily my least favorite recurring character in the series.... much like Danzo was. Great comparison. He simply believes that anything is just as long as it leads to the end of the Pirate Era. Both Kizaru and Akoiji have been shown to have respect or even sympathize with some Pirates. I mean even Smoker, whose main ambition is to detain Luffy, finds himself struggling with his morals about Pirates at points. I just honestly can't stand Akainu.

Both are on my Top 10 list of favorite characters for their respective manga. Danzo, #1 in Naruto and Sakazuki, #10 in One Piece.

Danzo is the true definition of a ninja. He believes in absolutes, and will stop at nothing to Achebe his goal and complete his mission. All for the sake of the village. Sure, he blurs the proverbial moral line, but he would be an interesting character at all if he was the "power of friendship > all" type character that Naruto is.

Sakazuki (or Akainu, what have you), in the same vein, is quite the similar person to Danzo; his motivation just remains unknown. By definition, he's a good guy, though our definition of good may be different. And though most people hate him for killing Ace, Ace is a pirate. He was unlawful, reckless and was a wanted man. Sakazuki was doing what every other Marine would do. Everything else considered villainous of him all boils down to absolutes, similar to Danzo. In fact, Sakazuki believes in what is known as "Absolute Justice". He ordered the destruction of the evacuation ship on Ohara because the chance that one of the scholars were on the ship. He also reprimanded the Marines that showed cowardice and tried to flee the battlefield. It was excessive, yes, but he's doing his job. And if he didn't do it well, he never would've been promoted to Fleet Admiral.

All-in-all, the characters are boiled down to perspective. I find them to be amazing characters.
