So I had recently been flipping through some old Nardo chapters just as a way to pass the time, and I had been going through the Chuunin Exam battles when I found this scan.
Immediately I was struck by a wave of nostalgia, because I remember that this scan is back when in Naruto the little things mattered. Back when character developement was key, and the whole shinobi premise seemed interesting and Gaara seemed to be an incredible antagonist and Lee was determined and Neji was searching for revenge on the main family and everything was just well written.
Strangely enough, I haven't felt this amount of tension in a written battle since Sasuke vs. Itachi in Part 2, which had a waaaaaaaaaaay bigger lead up to this fight. It's simply because in Part 2 Kishi was trying to juggle too much, between all these characters and making Naruto seem mature and still keeping it true to the series he wanted it to be; Part 1 was just much more raw to me seeing as the Rookie 9 and their teachers (Jiraiya and Tsunade included) and eventually the Sound 4 and Oro were the only characters that really needed development.
