Chapter 29 - "The Stages"
A small amount of fire is produced by Alice’s hands; making a campfire for the whole group to warm themselves in the cold darkness of the night. They have been traveling for 4 days since they left Lisfro, and are expecting their arrival to capital Sago tomorrow.
Skylar: Hahaha, nice work Alice!
They all sit around the campfire, either talking to each other or looking at the dark sky. Skylar and Luke are talking as they usual do; one eating beans and the other cleaning his guns.
Luke: Skylar, that’s the 9th can of beans you’re eating today… I seriously can’t understand how you’re not getting sick of eating it…
Skylar has the small wood spoon he uses to eat the beans with in his mouth; smiling and laughing at Luke’s comment.
Skylar: I’ve eaten it since I was a little kid..! My sister and I used to share the cans all the time.
A look with a small hint of surprise is seen in Luke’s face while he cleans his guns, and it doesn’t take long before he answers Skylar.
Luke: Oh, I didn’t know you have a sister…
The can of beans is easily emptied, and is thrown in the small bushes by Skylar who seems happy about the food he ate. He turns to Luke with some sauce from the beans on his freckled cheek, and gives off another small laugh.
Skylar: Yeah, she left our hometown like 4 years before me…
He suddenly remembers something about his fight with Slate; the leader of The Sand Cowboys who attacked Mia’s bar some days ago. He turns to Mia; asking her about it.
Skylar: Mia… Do you know what an emblem is…?
Mia stops looking at the starry sky, and looks immediately at the question filled Skylar. She takes out the cigarette from her mouth before answering his question.
Mia: Isn’t that the symbol of a cowboy group? Why do you ask?
The wooden spoon falls out of Skylar’s mouth when he jumps up in excitement, and speaks to Mia in a higher voice than before she answered.
Skylar: That sand guy I fought some days ago showed me their emblem, and it was really cool..! Where can we get one of those??
Mia takes some time before answering again; thinking about what to say. It doesn’t take too long though before she answers again; having the same cigarette in her mouth.
Mia: You’re in luck; the capital Sago is famous for their blacksmiths. They are the ones who make the emblems to us cowboys…
Skylar’s eyes flash like stars in excitement, and he sits down again; trying his best not to laugh out loud. Mia throws away her cigarette, and continues to talk with the boy who acts like a kid.
Mia: Well, about that Sand Milit you met in my hometown… You were really lucky he only was a Stage One Milit, or else you wouldn’t have had a chance…
The group turns quiet after her comment, and all of them look at the new member in confusion in several seconds before Alice speaks up with her light voice.
Alice: W-what do you mean with stage one?
Mia: Wait; don’t tell me you’ve never heard about The Stages…?
All of them shake their heads to her; making Mia let out a big sigh, which is the only sound around the campfire.
Mia: The Stages, also called Levels, are the “evolution” of the Milits. There are three stages of a Milit… Simply Stage One, Stage Two, and Stage Three. You go up a stage after hard work when you get stronger psychically and mentally. Only the strongest are on Stage Three, and some Milits stay on Stage One their whole life. Both you Skylar and Alice are still on Stage One.
Skylar and Alice look at each other; thinking about their own powers resting inside them. Mia opens her mouth again; continuing to explain about Milits.
Mia: Oh, and another thing… All Milit powers are unique. Since you Skylar has electricity as a power, means no one else have it. You’re the only Electricity Milit in the world, and it’s the same with Alice and every other Milit…
Luke stands up after finishing cleaning his revolvers; stretching and yawning.
Luke: Well, that’s enough talking; I think it’s time to sleep…
He walks into his own tent to sleep, and so does everyone else after putting out the fire and cleaning up around it.
-The next day-
A sweaty Skylar points at some smoke and houses in the far distance excitedly; jumping around smiling, and starts running towards it.
Skylar: There it is! The city Sago!!
