Chapter 17 - Liver Failure
A doctor with an old, green dress and small glasses examines the mother who is now lying sick in bed. Her stomach is somewhat bigger, and her face is yellow, including her eyes. They look up at the ceiling, not moving at all.
Doctor: Hmm, I see…
Both Mia and her father look worried at mother Theresa, who seems to be crying yellow tears. The doctor takes off his white gummy gloves, and turns around with a serious expression.
Father: …Well? What’s wrong?
Doctor: I’m afraid it’s liver failure. This is probably because of all the drinking…
Mia and her father look more worried at each other than before. The doctor puts some medicine on the desk, and walks towards the door with his small suitcase. He turns around one last time before leaving.
Doctor: Make sure she doesn’t move… It could immediately kill her.
They watch him leave before turning to mother Theresa. She looks at them, unable to move and speak.
Father: Mia… can you leave us alone for a second..?
Mia looks at him, nods, and leaves without arguing against it. She closes the door behind her after leaving the room slowly.
Father: What the hell did I tell you!? I told you drinking that much was bad for you! But did you listen? No..!
Sudden yelling by Mia’s father is heard through the house, and silence comes afterwards.
A weak voice is suddenly heard on the other side of the door.
Mother Theresa: D-Does… Does Mia h-hate me..?
It’s quiet in the house again, and Mia looks at the floor with her back leaned on the door. She listens to their conversation, but having a hard time doing it.
Father: You know it’s dangerous to move like that Theresa… and you shouldn’t talk-
Mother: D-Do… Do you have… anything to drink? I-I really want a beer right now…
Mia steps backwards speechless. Believing her mother would change was too good to be true. Anger is seen in her face while she walks out of the house.
She walks through the loud town full of people; ignoring people greeting her. She stops by some trees outside of town after some minutes of walking. She is quiet; looking at the dry ground in several seconds
Mia: DAMMIT, MOM!!
She screams with all her might; punching the tree in front of her. The tree doesn’t move at all, and another scream is heard. Mia falls down on the ground in pain after the punch; bleeding from her fist.
She lies down; looking at her bleeding fist with tears in her eyes. The wind is strong, and is the only sound around Mia. She lies on the ground for several minutes with mixed feelings; not knowing what to do.
Mia: …Dammit, mom…
She sweeps the almost dried blood from her fist on the ground, stands up, and starts walking back to her home.
Close to home she hears drunken voices near her house. Worried; she runs in the direction of the voices; expecting the worst. Mia runs around a corner of another house; meeting a horrific sight.
Random Cowboy: …Theresa! C-come back! The bar is not the same without you..!
Her home is surrounded by drunken cowboys, and they all want mother Theresa back to the bar. The house is slowly being set on fire by one of them.
Random Cowboy: Hahahaha! Burn her out of the house so she comes back to the bar!
