Tragedy's Worst | A History Retold
Like most stories begin, the hero of our story starts off in the peaceful, nomadic village of Beirn. Born to two wonderful parents who loved him dearly, Fein grew up in what you could call a wonderful yet normal childhood. I mean as far as normal could get. You see Beirn was a village near the border of Valenzia, the country known for war and famine and home to the evil Lord Bastien. Lord Bastien had come into power after the strange disappearance of his father Lord Frahminas. Using his quick wits and seductive charm, Lord Bastien quickly won the favor of the council and took reign of his father's vast kingdom. The once prosperous Valenzia quickly became a warring nation causing despair and turmoil throughout the land. And soon that evil would cross the border and reach the village of Beirn.
It was a starry night sky that welcomed the arrival of Fein. His parents Georg and Rhaine, the most loving and caring parents one could hope to find, were ecstatic that tonight would be born their second son. They had been planning for the last nine months about his room and the things they would teach this young child. Rhaine especially had gone over how his future should be like who he should marry and how he would make her proud so she could show off to her friends. Georg would laugh and say something to the effect, "I just hope he learns how to defend himself and survive on his own...although whatever makes him happy is enough." They would both laugh and agree, hoping that however cruel a world outside would be, that their love would be enough to give him hope and strength.
For a clear night as this, it was quite odd that out of nowhere soon came falling little snowflakes. It covered the trees outside and the forest that surrounded them. It covered the shed outside where Georg kept his carpentry tools and equipment for when he would go work on a project. It even covered their cabin. The cabin Georg had made when he married Rhaine so many years ago. She was the daughter of once-then kingdom of Arguel. You see Arguel was a small wealthy kingdom which exported silver to other countries. The once-then King Lucien decided to trade gold with Ergol which was a known to be ruled by mercenaries and thieves. They decided on a truce if they agreed to trade gold for silver. Both rulers agreed and decided to meet at Ergol and sign a truce. When the king arrived, he was killed. He never made it past the gates. They would invade then begin an invasion on Arguel and proceed towards the border. In desperation to not hand the kingdom over to scoundrels, the princess decided to lure the Ergolians toward the courtyard of Arguel and lock them inside and set the town on fire, in effect killing the lot of them and destroying the kingdom in the process. However, with no planning strategy, having set the town on fire she failed to save the villagers and to her dismay, burned the people alive with the Ergolians. Feeling more than responsible and having cited malaise, Princess Rhaine gave up her rights to the throne and kingdom. The kingdom would then be rebuilt and named, Valenzia.
Birth of a Hero | A Country's Hope
Back at Beirn, Rhaine began feeling a strong sensation in her abdomen having had the same pain from her first child she knew Fein would not be far behind. Georg, looking towards her beautiful blue eyes and firebrand hair which he fell in love with, noticed she was getting a little older and that soon both of them would leave this world. Georg knew that he would have to try hard to teach the boy as much as he could before that time came. His hope would be that their love would give Fein the strength to overcome any obstacle in his life. He knew he wasn't in the best shape either. I his youth he was a tall and strong fighter. He even used to be a knight in the service of Rhaine's father, King Lucien. His once dark brown hair had faded into grey hair. His once rough skin had slowly withered into thin and wrinkly complexion. He wasn't exactly a pretty boy, but if he was close to it in his youth, he was nowhere near compared now. Before he could continue reminiscing, Rhaine began to feel pain in her lower abdomen and told Georg that something wasn't right. Her pain began to increase, worrying both of them. Georg grabbed his coat and told Rhaine he would be back with the Doctor. He came back in seconds dragging Dr. Heiss with him. Within a couple minutes they prepared the room and were ready to deliver the baby. Rhaine began to look paler and began to bleed. She went unconscious. Dr. Heiss gasped.
"Georg....the baby is going to be okay but your wife is bleeding excessively. I can only save one."
"What do you mean! You have to save them both! I can't live without them!"
Georg began to cry. He knew Heiss wouldn't lie to him. They had been friends since childhood and he had always trusted what Heiss had to say. So he made a decision.
"Okay....save the boy"
End of Prologue
Chapter Quote: The worst decision is not making the right one and failing, but in never making one.
