No, because at that age is when "Kids" are irresponsible, dumb, loves attention, party too much, and just got there license.

Too many kids would die in car accidents. Cigarettes do not make you drunk and not focused.

Kids around 18-24 are probably already the highest percent in drunk related accidents.
The USA has some of the most immature teenagers in the world.

Go to a few college parties and you'll see why it's 21. Party goers just get extremely shit faced and black out and don't remember a single thing.

Theres no fun in that.

Also, don't forget the amount of DUI car accidents.
cause there scared if they lowerd it to 18 more people will die
Do you really all believe more people would die if they were allowed to drink alcohol at let's say 18 (beer and wine 16 - that's how it goes in my country)? I mean think about it:

You are allowed to drive a car as soon as you're 16 right? But you can't get alcohol before you're 21. This is a gap of 5 years. Now I ask you, is it more likely that those teens drink and drive when they are actually allowed to drink the alcohol or when it's FORBIDDEN? If they are dump enought to drink and drive in the first place it means that they are immature, stupid or want attention (most likely all three). So what will be more tempting for them? Drink and drive when they actually might drink or when they must not?

Do you really believe that? So you think the Brain just stays as it is after 20? Nah mate, that's bullcrap. It's developing and not everything scientists/doctors or whatever say is correct.
The human brain does not fully develop until the age of 25. Of course you have to take in other considerations such as brain damage, disorders, etc. for some people.

Scientists and doctors are capable of making mistakes just as everyone else can; it does not mean though that you should not take into account what they have to say.

if anything the age should be escalated to 24 or 25. there are too many accidents here with teens drinking and driving. doesnt stop me from getting drunk and high at the same time but at least i know not to friggin take a car out or something. i tell myself beforehand to just stay put until everything wears out. im still alive so it works :)

also here in Canada, 18 is the legal age of drinking. I never really thought of myself to drink so yea. My friends here are like so excited to turn to the age of 18 because they can't wait to drink. Well, i don't see anything wrong about drinking, just don't drink and drive(advice). :D i'm just about to be 15 so yea. Maybe if i get to 18. Just maybe. but i don't want to go to bars and etc.

I thought this discussion was about the legal drinking age in the US and not about whether or not marihuana or any other similar substance is harmful?

Anyways on topic: It's not that illogical at all really. People go to a university when they're 21 right? Basically, since you guys can drive at 16, and you'd be able to drink at 18, that would leave you with a gap of 3 years to consume alcohol and still drive, which is dangerous when you look at it. If you're 21 at uni, and you drink there, you don't use the car that often I assume, since you're in a dorm or how ever it works, so you won't be drunk and driving.

Probly wasn't the weed probly just a psychotic friend. Never seen anyone have any problems from weed, and I know people who have smoked over 50 years.
They weren't friends; they were patients with no inherited predisposition to any mental illness. It can't always be explained; everyone is different. Take for example when some women who drink while pregnant and the child is born with F.A.S. (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome); then there are those women who do have a few drinks and their child is born healthy. Same with smoking. The advice is still the same; do not drink when pregnant.

Weed isn't as safe as everyone thinks it is.

It is, I was just answering to someone else's posts. I apologize.

Alcohol is strictly forbidden in dorms; some campuses may allow drinking but not all of them. Most college kids don't care and still drink and drive. The rules and consequences won't stop them until something happens to them.

As I stated in an earlier post, the brain does not fully stop developing until the age of 25; if you binge drink or you are a constant drinker at an early age (teens) one can cause heavy brain damage to oneself. Once the damage is done, it is irreversible. Again, kids don't really care or think about it. They usually tend to do "what feels right" "what looks cool," etc.

The brain damage it can cause is one very important reason not to lower the age.

Ah, but you are assuming that people obey the law. This is certainly not the case, and I wouldn't be surprised if most people start drinking way before they're 21. I know for a fact that kids will all get in their friend's car and drive around with a bottle and drink as they cruise around the city at night. They're kids and don't have a place they can go do it, and since they're under age they can't do it at home, so they do it in a car.

This is more than typical actually. However, if the drinking age was lowered to 16, then they'd just go to a buddy's house and hang out...they wouldn't need to drive around with no place to go. Or you can make drinking age and driving age 18, but just so long as they're able to drink at or before they get a car. Heck, raise both to 21 and then the problem's solved. xd

Mehh, I'm against drinking alcohol in general. Just because barely anything good comes out of it. Although I'm not strongly against it, merely personal preference.

To be honest, I don't even like the taste of it :| don't know why everyone drinks so often, it's disgusting in my opinion.

There's a 50/50 leway as to why the drinking age could be 18/21. >.< I'm fine with 21, the idiots in my generation wouldn't do well if the drinking age was 18. Hell, they're doing shitty without alcohol, and that wouldn't help at all >.>

I personally think that Mary Jane should be legal instead of Cigs and shit like that I've never seen any psychiatrical damage to anyone from Mary but Cigs kill you slowly

But alcohol is firewater and its kinda gross but I mean if you prefer it I'm on your team

You are thinking of regular beer. Malt beer and liquor are pretty good. And when it comes to regular beer Shiner Blonde and Shiner Ultra Blonde are pretty decent.

I agree that its messed up that you can enlist at 17 but at the same time no, people that are 21 cant even control themselves and be responsible enough to drink. Since you cant filter through the ones who can handle it from the ones who cant, no.

I live in Scotland and it's 18 over here. I'm only 16 and to be honest nobody my age really obeys the law, I've been drunk a lot of times and never been caught. Who cares if it's 21 man, just find someone 21 years old to buy you alcohol if it's that big a deal!

Alcohool seriously messes up your brain on a chemical level, permanently damaging it. The effects are much worse if the brain hasn't finished developing. Usually, brains finish developing between ages 20-25, sometimes as late as 30. so 21 is already a compromise. Pushing it to 18 is brain suicide. Do Americans need to be even more mentally impaired?
