Three thousand feet above the plains and vales,
Amid the regions wild and mountains high,
Where grow trees, where dwell the birds and beasts,
Thy water moves and form the rippling waves
That spread around and fill thy bottom deep.
Thy water's clear as crystal pure, but when
The raindrops fall, thy surface clean is full
Of mud, polluting thy transparent state.
Thy volume swells, thy depth no longer holds
The dirt and mud and myriad drops of rain.
An outlet thou hast carved thru hill-walled shores,
Where flows the surplus water full of dirt.
Adown, adown, adown thy outlet flows
And cuts its winding bed across the hills,
It glides towards the distant falls
Then pours itself below with thundering roar.
